Age of Ultron Starts Filming, We Get Hints at Scarlet Witch’s Costume

Man, is it that time already? Avengers: Age of Ultron has started filming in Johannesburg.

A South African film organization release a statement about The Avengers, revealing that the two week shoot, which began on Tuesday, is engaged in capturing the movie’s opening sequence. They also confirm that they are filming on location: Johannesburg isn’t standing in for another city. The Avengers are going to South Africa.

And while it’s not known yet whether that’s where we’ll see Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, I hope not. Primarily because the giant cloak that features in Olsen’s costume doesn’t sound like it’d be too great in the Johannesburg sun. The actress spoke to Total Film and dropped some details about her costume.

My favourite piece is my secrecy cloak that prevents anyone from seeing what I’m wearing. There’s a hood, and a robe – it protects the image! I don’t think Joss ever would have hired me, honestly, if he wanted me to wear those outfits; I am not a professional athlete and nor am I a model. Wearing those costumes wouldn’t be fun for anyone who wasn’t those things. He already had a different idea. It respects and involves the comic-book character but it’s different, more rooted. It’s for someone today. Well, if someone walked around wearing what she wore in the comics, people would stop and say, ‘What the hell… she thinks she’s a superhero!’

A promising start, in my opinion, and one that I can’t wait to see on the screen.

So no pinks tights with red leotard? I’m totally cool with that, because yeah that would transfer too well to live action. Actually I wouldn’t mind if Scarlet Witch wore something closer to her costume with the coat in X-Men: Evolution, with some alterations.

Found something a while back that said Marvel would also be filming at Fort Bard in Italy. Dunno details, but it sure looks like a secret villain’s base to me.

Cloaks? i love cloaks, so i am sold already xD

Look again, she’s talking about the robe she’s wearing to keep her real costume hidden.

As long as she’s wearing red, I’m okay with it. Scarlet Witch is like Emma Frost: both characters are more defined by the color of their costume than by their costume design.

Did they ever nail down that rumor about Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel appearing in the movie?

The cloak she mentioned is the privacy cloak she wears on set. I wonder what the finished product will look like (hopefully it’s not just a corset like her Ultimate look).

I do like hearing the actress for once weighing in on this preemptively and just saying the comic look isn’t workable for her, since costume changes tend to be the #1 point of contention for a lot of fans.

Filming in South Africa? PLEASE let that be a hint that Black Panther will be in this thing.

It’s from Latino Review who tends to be very hit or miss in what they report, so I sadly am not expecting much.

Even a bad snapshot of Aaron’s Quicksilver costume will look better than the official Quicksilver costume in Days of Future Past. I already know. At the very least, the Avengers designers know what not to do thanks to Singer.

It’s almost like Fox is still stuck in the early 2000′s when comic book films were being newly defined and producers were afraid of silliness. Marvel Studios has updated and embraced the colorful looks of their characters.

Because Quicksilver has traditionally been such an icon of dignity and style.

I think the most we can hope for is a mention that Ultron wants a new body made of Vibranium (Fox has a monopoly on Adamantium) & that it comes from Wakanda.

It looks like they found a home for Baron Strucker.

Not to nitpick but her whole quote here is basically saying they ditched Scarlet Witch’s costume because it was silly and impractical. Marvel does a LOT better than WB and Fox when it comes to translating costumes, but they’re still just as quick to play the “It’s silly and impractical” card when it’s not workable. Hence Hawkeye and the Falcon in black leather or Cap wearing his stealth suit now.

Quicksilver’s Fox design is just bad from every conceivable angle.

Scarlet Witch’s costume looks weird even for a comic book costume so whatever they do will probably be an improvement.

The secrecy cloak is there to conceal that Scarlet Witch’s movie costume is just a red Slanket.

  • Richard Grant

Going by the trailers of Winter Soldier and some potential spoilers on other forums, by the end of the film he will have abandoned the Stealth Suit and have returned to the WW2 costume.
I think the use of the Stealth Suit in this film had less to do with practicality, and far more to do with creating a story reason for him to return to the first films costume…Because the costume used in The Avengers is so close to what he wore in WW2 the shift back to that style costume would make less of a visual impact if he wore a variation of the Avengers costume and would have less of a story impact.
(Especially if the rumours are true and the Stealth costume is used as his SHIELD uniform, before the return of the traditional Cap costume being used as a visual representation of his break away from SHIELD.)

Also even when Marvel have gone the impractical for live-action route (Hawk-Eye being the clear example), they’ve adapted elements of the comic costuming for Live-Action: the bare-arms and purple highlights on Hawk-Eyes costume are reminiscent of the comic look, and the thing that really stands out is the lack of a mask. Fox on the other hand just took the simple approach of ignoring anything from the comic and going for plain Black Leather (although First Class did a fine job of working in the Blue and Yellow.)

“It respects and involves the comic-book character but it’s different, more rooted.” …. if it respects the original character then why are they whitewashing her?
