Happy 25th Anniversary, The Princess Bride

It was a time when life… didn’t seem so complicated. You know, 1987, when action comedies got romcom voiceover guys to do their trailers, and everything was drenched in customer service hold music.

But seriously: The Princess Bride, you complete us, at least you have ever since I got over how utterly terrifying I thought the torture scene was when I was a kid. Happy Birthday. You’ll be happy to know that even though I’d watched you, the book still fooled me until I was about half-way through it.

The book fooled me all the way to Powell’s Books, where I attempted to locate a copy of the “original Morgenstern book.” I’m not sure to this day whether the store employee who was helping me was trolling me, playing along, or just as clueless as I was.

And, thankfully, a classic which has not yet been rebooted/remade.

There’s a shortage of perfect films in the world; it’d be a shame to ruin this one.

Yeah, the book fooled me for a bit, too. I wanted to search for the ‘real’ one so I could read the extensive, ridiculously detailed pages about history and hunting and hats (because I am a nerd). I don’t remember which footnote made me realize that he was making that all up, but I do remember being sad.

I’m kinda appallled by that trailer – in the middle, it spoils two different major punchlines and then reveals two different major plot twists in a row – [Spoiler alert] – Count Rugen turning and running, Vizini’s death, Humperdink’s conspiracy, AND Wesley’s death.

What is with that music? Did someone think that was funny and we’re out of the loop now?

I felt so stupid when the book fooled me. I genuinely thought I must be the only one gullible enough to fall for it. This makes me feel so much better!

If this film ever gets tainted by the slime that is the Hollywood remake, I think I’ll have to leave this planet. I hear the TARDIS is swinging past earth pretty soon; I’d gladly become the Doctor’s companion if it meant never seeing this film get a remake. Granted I’d probably become the Doctor’s companion anyway, but that’s besides the point.

The Princess Bride is one of the most timeless movies ever made.

READ THE BOOK – I just finished it and it’s spectacular. I was worried about reading it for so long because I didn’t think it would capture the humor of it but it’s all there and so much more. As other’s stated – the author does a kind of “fooled you!” thing with the writing as well which definitely adds to it.

Also, he wrote both the book and screenplay so I don’t think there’s much of a risk of the movie being remade unless he has control over it.
