Lost In Austen Trailer Is Literary Vacation

You’ve probably inserted yourself into a Jane Austen novel once or twice (or a hundred) times in your life but what would you actually do if you literally found yourself in one? This trailer for Lost in Austen shows us we’d probably muck everything up but at least we’d have a good time.

For those not in the know (like me), Lost in Austen was a 2008 British mini-series. The synopsis is as follows: “Amanda, an ardent Jane Austen fan, lives in present day London with her boyfriend Michael, until she finds she’s swapped places with Austen’s fictional creation Elizabeth Bennet.” Hilarity ensues of course. Written by Guy Andrews it stars Jemima Rooper in the starring role and Doctor Who’s Alex Kingston as Mrs. Bennet! Oh and, in case you were wondering, it’s on Netflix instant watch.

I am stupidly happy about this! I’ve been wanting to see this series. I loved Jemima Rooper in Hex (terrible series that it was), and Alex Kingston, well, yeah.

I watched this a few weeks ago after it was on my “recommendations” list for months and I LOVED IT. It was long (I didn’t realize at the time it was a mini series), but I thoroughly enjoyed it. What a lovely escape from reality.

The only bad thing about it being on Netflix instant watch, is that they changed it at some point to the condensed version. So they cut out quite a few scenes. It was originally a 4 part mini series and shown in episodes. You can find the DVD at Best Buy for 13$ and its well worth it.

I’ve seen this, and it was a very fun watch. I have a feeling I’d probably manage to screw things up, too. When I played the visual novel based on Jane Austin’s work, I ended up with Bingley. So, yeah.

I bought the DVD and have watched it at least a dozen times.  I absolutely love it.

I am a little confused – you can play a visual novel? Was it a game of some kind? I’ve never heard of something like that before.

If she’s talking about the kind of VN I’m thinking about it (I’m familiar with Japanese Visual Novels), it’s a computer game with still images, lots of text and the reader can choose to do different things at different points which puts them on different paths to different endings. I just had no idea there was a romance VN for Austen, what’s the name of it?

Yeah, they cut out one of my favorite scenes, where Amanda sings “Downtown” to Bingley, Darcy, and Caroline. So adorable. Get the real version, and don’t bother with the edited Netflix version.

That is… Wow, Jasper Fforde anyone? Do you guys know Jasper Fforde? The Eyre Affair? Any relation? What’s with the Jane Eyre obsession?

A quick Google search for “Jane Austen visual novel” brought up “Matches and Matrimony”: http://www.gamezebo.com/news/2011/04/13/jane-austen-goes-casual-conversation-about-matches-amp-matrimony.

    Interesting.

It’s not Fforde-ish at all, in the sense that it’s not a cultural thing about getting into books, this gal just found a secret cabinet in her bathroom which leads into the novel. There’s no science to it, there are no LitCops. Though it would be awesome if they made a Thursday Next film. Love those books.

So. I laughed annoyingly loud at: “will you do something for me? *darcy emerges dripping wet from lake*”

I have seen this movie before. It is one of my favorites. Its so good and should be watched!

Yep, that’s the one. It’s fairly interesting, and combines several of her books.
