This Exists... Because of A Lady

An Ode To Tumblr In The Style Of Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start The Fire”

This lady really loves Tumblr. She loves tumblr so much she wrote a song about it. And it just so happens to be set to the Billy Joel song, “We Didn’t Start The Fire.” Her version is titled, “I Live Life on Tumblr” and it pretty much nails our usage of the website. The vocals are a little tough to hear so to help you out we’ve posted the lyrics under the cut. Because let’s face it – after all these years, you still don’t have the original song memorized.

Fangirl squeals, Doctor Who, reblog is all I do,
watching Sherlock, Reichenfeels, we need Season Three.

Gorgeous graphics, keyboard smashing, signal boosts and Mako-bashing,
Bryke is trolling, Moffat’s trolling, perfect OTP,

Social justice, F-bombs, food porn, om nom nom,
Mean Girls, “The Life and Times,” and lawnmowers that can fly,

Please stop tagging your hate, this fic never updates,

Fluffy fics, fanmix, what the hell is Facebook?

Hey, I just met you… and this is crazy. But here’s my number, so call me maybe?

Her tumblr is BatmanSymbol so…awesome, and is under the name 0nlyHands on Youtube. She wrote that she originally planned to set the whole thing to images from the lyrics but didn’t have editing software anymore. If you do, feel free to give it a shot.

We tumblrites are odd in our compliments.

calling someone rude (depending on the situation) usually means ‘you are very attractive, enough so that it is giving me emotional problems.’

fuck you = ‘don’t ever change, you’re perfect’

god i hate tumblr: Seriously its a blog device for people who can’t accept feedback. Not to mention the terrible one button press reblog function just turns it into this daisy chain of hipsters just reblogging what other people say is cool to show how cool they are.

Give me any number of REAL blogging sites any day, just not tumblr.

  • Katie Marinelli

Sounds like you had a bad experience on tumblr which is too bad. But like many sites its all about who you follow and what you use your account for. So you might get a different experience if you change those.

  • Anonymous

my only bad experience with tumblr is that it still exists. Its such an echo chamber of stupidity. The interent was meant to be where stupid ideas go to die, but tumblr is the place where stupid ideas go, to be reblogged & have the pretense of relevency.

Between the reblog button & the lack of real user feed back, i just wish Tumblr would die. An that is why i hate Tumblr… Any other blog site comes preloaded with the ability to respond & without the ability to 1 button press copy, stick & republish.

Tumblr is for people with opinions, who have no idea why they hold those opinions.

  • Katie Marinelli

Well, I guess that’s just your opinion which you’re completely entitled to. I’m one of the many people that highly enjoy tumblr and use it in a couple of different ways. And with the memes its all about personal opinion, some people find them hilarious and some people don’t. Tumblr might not be the place for you but it doesn’t mean it’s not a place for other people so it would be nice if you could try to be a little less mean in your critique of the site. It has plenty of flaws, everyone on tumblr knows that, but for the people who have accounts that they use often the flaws are outweighed by the enjoyment.

Lol, perhaps I’m a little biased because … uh, I made this video, but  hear me out. It’s easy to have a pretty negative experience with the place, but it’s got wonderful things to offer too, like everywhere. Tumblr takes a while to get used to, because it isn’t like other blogging sites at all. And it doesn’t try to be.

A Tumblog is different from other blogs because it’s built on the connectivity the owner will have with other people, people who have the same interests or the same perspectives. Or, for that matter, people with differing perspectives: it’s also a place for healthy and intelligent discourse. The ability to do a reblog-back-and-forth debate rather than just duking it out in some poor kid’s comment section makes it a general public forum, far more flexible than most rigid blogging sites, and I think therein lies the appeal for most people. To me, Tumblr seems like ONE BIG GIANT BLOG for EVERYONE rather than a million little universes.

To be honest, that’s part of the reason I made this video. Yeah, it’s meant to be silly and fun, but I know so many people feel a legitimate emotional connection to the Tumblr culture. You’ll find trolls there, and stupid memes. Obvious; you’ll find them all over the internet. But you’ll also find openminded, accepting people who are willing to discuss sex positivity, slut-shaming, fat-shaming, misogyny, and other frighteningly pervasive social issues. You’ll find people who don’t know their own identity and people who’ll reach out to those people. And they’re all a community. A supportive community. There’s no single spearhead of the movement, it’s not like traditional blogs where it’s like “I’LL FOLLOW YOU TO THE END OF THE EARTH EPIC BLOGGER PERSON!” It’s really just a circle of people talking. Which is why we have absurd inside jokes (like everything in this video).

Very interesting comment about it being a place for “people with opinions who have no idea why they hold those opinions.” I see where you’re coming from, because yeah, a huge amount of the site is built on reblogging. But honestly, a lot of people need guidance as to what’s rolling around inside their heads. On Tumblr, I might find someone who expresses my opinion perfectly, more eloquently than I ever could. That’s the type of stuff people choose to reblog – and all that means is that people are listening to and respecting other people’s opinions. (And that’s not even delving into the beautiful art and fiction you can find in the fandoms! People are dedicated, of course you’ll want to show your appreciation for their hard work by liking and reblogging with love attached.)

I really can’t say how much I’ve learned about people from Tumblr. (How the hell did I not know what a trigger warning was before signing up?) The best thing about it is that it’s human.

Also people are friggin’ hilarious, that helps. :D

Oops, sorry, I rant’d! I hope this doesn’t come off too preachy, I just see a lot of detestation for Tumblr around the internet and it saddens me.

(Keep in mind that I’ve no idea what the hipster side of Tumblr does. I live in the fandom and societal-critique sections. XD)

Or, y’know, the lovely STOP IT WITH YOUR FACE I HATE YOU = my, you are attractive. please keep that up. thanks!

This doesn’t come across as ranty to me at all, but very balanced and thought out and makes sense to me even though I, personally, think Tumblr is uncontrollably INSANITY. Which is why I feel compelled to reply to you that this was very nicely explained.

Seems you are talking about the hipster side of tumblr while this video is about the fandom side. In regards to the latter, tumblr is a really great platform for people to share fanworks. The gif sets, graphics, songs, fanart, and fanfiction are amazing; I’m forever in awe of the site’s many talented creators.  Tumblr also has a great social justice presence. However, the site’s biggest draw is always going to be that people feel at home amongst others who share their obsessions. I’ve made lots of wonderful friends on the site. Love this song!
