After 14 years and 327 episodes, the fan-favorite series Supernatural is coming to an end. The show, which premiered in 2005, has seen three different presidents, the rise of internet fandom, and the mainstreaming of geek culture. In fact, it’s hard to remember a time when Supernatural wasn’t on the air. The series premiered on the WB, before crossing over to the CW, and its epic run makes it the longest-running American sci-fi/genre series in history.
The series, created by Eric Kripke, stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as Dean and Sam Winchester, brothers who follow in their father’s footsteps by traveling cross-country to hunt down supernatural creatures. The two stars made the announcement in an Instagram video, where they were joined by co-star Misha Collins, who plays fan-favorite Angel, Castiel:
Executive producers Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb released a statement saying, “Firstly, we would like to thank all the people who have been involved with the show both in front of and behind the camera. For us it has been an experience of a lifetime. The support we have had from both Warner Bros Television and The CW has been incredible. We’d like to give special thanks to Jensen, Jared and Misha for making this journey so special. It is now most important to us to give these characters that we love the send off they deserve.”
Padalecki says in the video, “We’ve cried some tears and we’ll cry some more, but we’re grateful and we’re going to work all that emotion into next season.” And Ackles relayed a message from the show’s creator Eric Kripke, who said “In a show about family, it is amazing, and it is the pride of his life that it became family.”
The upcoming final season will be comprised of 20 episodes, and presumably some sort of fan special or finale event to mark the end of the long-running series. Despite several attempts, the CW has never moved forward with a Supernatural spin-off series, but perhaps the end of the show will open up a new avenue for a potential series set in the same universe.
