Nothing could have prepared me for the Evanescence song in ‘The Rehearsal’

The mind of Nathan Fielder is a place no one truly understands. While watching The Rehearsal, it is very clear that this is one of the most unpredictable men on the planet. But in episode 3 of season 2, Fielder took his outlandish antics even further.

Throughout most of season 2, we’ve seen Fielder try to navigate the touchy relationship between a pilot and a co-pilot. Unpacking the tense relationship between the aviation experts has been a hot button topic for Fielder but it has led to him trying to apply his studies to the relationship between the two. He helped retrain a cloned dog to act like the source material and more.

But in the most recent episode, Fielder applied the cloned dog theory to Chesley Sullenberger aka Sully, the man who landed the plane in the “Miracle on the Hudson” plane crash. Fielder thought that if he could retrain the clone, he could train himself to be like Sully. But what ended up being one of most deranged things he did was connect Sully to the band Evanescence.

Evanescence, which is led by Amy Lee, is a rock band that brought us songs like “Bring Me to Life” and “My Immortal.” Fielder used his own detective skills to connect the band to the Miracle on the Hudson, claiming that 23 seconds of silence on the transcript of the crash (from Sully) was the pilot listening to the chorus of the iconic song “Bring Me to Life.”

Look, I heard tale of the song being in part of the episode and even knowing it was there wasn’t enough to prepare me for Fielder as Sully listening to it as what is essentially a hype song. It was weirdly so perfect and now I want to believe nothing else.

It has Amy Lee’s stamp of approval

If there is one thing about the internet, it is that we’re all going to be talking about shows and Nathan Fielder’s unique brand of comedy is no exception. Even Amy Lee herself is talking about The Rehearsal. The singer spoke with Vulture about song’s inclusion in the HBO show and praised Fielder for the placement of the song.

“He’s some kind of genius,” Lee said. “I love it so much. I want to shout from the rooftops and tell everybody to watch it, but I feel like I have to give some serious disclaimers. Oh God, like the choking on the milk from the puppet boob? I was literally sitting there looking through my fingers.”

She even went as far as to say that she was touched by the fact that Fielder thought Sully was listening to her song when he went on to save the lives of his passengers. “It’s such a wonderful thing to imagine that something like a song can give you an outlet to be vulnerable when you don’t feel like you’re really allowed to be. I relate to that.”

And Lee is a fan of this season. “I feel like the path he’s going down with pilots this season feels like he’s actually trying to solve a problem,” she said. “It’s about the crashes, and about the communication, and about the social world of that community—which, as outsiders, we don’t really know anything about. It’s so fascinating to see that there’s a deficiency right there. It seems like what Fielder is trying to do would be really good for people.”

Unless Sully negates this story, I am now going to believe that he took 23 seconds to himself to listen to the chorus of “Bring Me to Life.”
