‘Daredevil: Born Again’ proves that Matt and Fisk are always going to be the same and good

At the start of Daredevil: Born Again, both Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) and Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) both said that they were going to stay in their lane. That obviously didn’t work. It’s Daredevil and Kingpin.

But what I really love about the first season of Born Again is the fact that we get to see Matt and Wilson attempting to be “better” and not lean into their other personas. It obviously does not work, especially by the time we get to the finale. While the start of the season had Matt and Wilson talking about not being Daredevil and Kingpin, we saw just how far they fell back into their old habits by the end.

The finale, titled “Straight to Hell” has Matt fully back as Daredevil after saving Fisk’s life at an event. While Daredevil has “been” back, it is the first time we really see him ignoring his responsibilities and diving back into the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in this way. And right in time for Fisk to fully turn back into the Kingpin we know.

The police commissioner is taken by Fisk and his team and when things don’t go the way that Wilson wants them to, he takes matters into his own hands. Literally. He rips the man’s head in two. And it shows the real decent into the Kingpin we know and love to hate.

Change is good but if there is one thing we know about Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, it is that the two characters are going to pretend like they can change even if we know they can’t. Matt is always going to turn back to Daredevil and Fisk will always use his power to get what he wants. That’s just who they are.

Part of what made Born Again‘s premiere season such an interesting one is that the two did attempt to leave their past behind them. The two saw a future where they wouldn’t end up falling into those same patterns and while Matt broke sooner than Fisk, it was only a matter of time. Matt giving up his cowl because of Foggy’s death is something that we know Foggy Nelson wouldn’t have wanted. So it was really just a waiting game.

But I do love how the show kept us on the edge of our seats to see how the Kingpin would come back. He is in a position of power and it would only take one big moment to bring him back out and taking out the police commissioner ended up being his downfall. We don’t know what the future holds for these two but Fisk did end the season by issuing an 8 PM curfew on all of New York and enacting Marshall Law.

You can’t be a vigilante and with Matt and Frank both in the streets, it will be interesting to see where these two end up by the start of the next season.
