As inflation hits a 40 year high, Americans are experiencing soaring prices on everything from gasoline to groceries. Luckily for us, Bloomberg Opinion is here to help, with a special op-ed by Teresa Ghilarducci titled “Inflation Sting Most If You Earn Less Than $300K. Here’s How to Deal.” The thrust of the article is this: eat lentils, take the bus, and stop being poor, you dumb plebe. Wow! So helpful!
Ghilarducci also recommends saving money by letting your beloved pet die of cancer, writing “If you’re one of the many Americans who became a new pet owner during the pandemic, you might want to rethink those costly pet medical needs. It may sound harsh, but researchers actually don’t recommend pet chemotherapy — which can cost up to $10,000 — for ethical reasons.” What’s more, you can save money by turning your dead dog into a stylish fur coat, writes Cruella Ghilarducci (okay, she didn’t write that part, but I feel like we’re one step away here).

Folks on Twitter were quick to roast the out of touch tweet and the author, and honestly who among us is surprised. A billionaire’s news site doesn’t understand the struggles of the non-wealthy? What a shock. Let’s be clear: making less than $300K is the reality for 99 percent of Americans. People are struggling, and the last thing we need is a condescending lecture from a millionaire. Something tells me Teresa Ghilarducci has never taken the bus. It’s also alarming that Ghilarducci would place the onus of inflation on average Americans, instead of highlighting government policies and wealth redistribution that could actually help working people. Ghilarducci responded to the online outrage by tweeting, “Anyone who is responding to my Bloomberg piece should actually read the article. Inflation is wildly regressive. And so is the Federal Reserve’s response. You can’t solve inflation with rate hikes.”
Okay, but that’s not why people are pissed off at you. They’re pissed because you told them to kill their dogs, eat lentils, and sell their cars. It’s the patronizing and cruel tone threaded throughout the entire article. It’s literally “let them eat cake”, except people actually like cake. Rich people really will do anything to avoid paying their fair share of taxes.
