Reelblack shared an interview with Ava DuVernay yesterday which revealed that DuVernay’s first television show, Queen Sugar, will have an all-women directorial team. While DuVernay didn’t reveal any specific names, she mentioned many of them are women from the “black independent film space.”
Queen Sugar, an adaptation of Natalie Baszile’s novel of the same name, follows the story of a mother and daughter who inherit a sugarcane farm in Louisiana. Rutina Wesley will be starring, with Oprah Winfrey in a reoccurring role. The show will air on the Oprah Winfrey Network.
DuVernay also briefly mentions she’s working on her next film, which she says she is excited about but keeping under wraps, and recommends Cynthia Bond’s Ruby for your next read.
Are you looking forward to Queen Sugar?
