Queen Sugar, an adaptation of Natalie Baszile’s novel of the same name, follows the story of a mother and daughter who inherit a sugarcane farm in Louisiana. Rutina Wesley will be starring, with Oprah Winfrey in a reoccurring role. The show will air on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

DuVernay also briefly mentions she’s working on her next film, which she says she is excited about but keeping under wraps, and recommends Cynthia Bond’s Ruby for your next read.
