Michelle Pfeiffer’s Janet van Dyne Gets Her Due in New Ant-Man and The Wasp Poster

Recommended Videos

Michelle Pfeiffer returning to the world of comic book film adaptations is cause for celebration, but the fact that she will be playing the original female Avenger (and founding team member/the one who came up with the name “Avengers”), Janet van Dyne, is even more cause for celebration. While we haven’t gotten a good look at the former Catwoman in the trailer, the latest movie post for Ant-Man and The Wasp gives us a better look at our golden age heroine.

From what we learned in the first Ant-Man, Janet has been missing since 1987, when she vanished into the Quantum Realm, an alternate dimension that you can access through magic, a Sling Ring, or the subatomic shrinking technology done by the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym.

Pym assumed his wife was dead until Ant-Man 2.0 returned safely from the Quantum Realm, giving him hope for Janet’s survival. I personally would think he would have wanted to confirm that any time between the 1987 and 2015, but I’m not a super-duper-scientist.

As can be seen from the movie poster, it looks like Janet has been making some Mad-Max style adjustments to her costume. However, after spending decades in the Quantum Realm, it’s unknown how much damage was done to her mind. While I’m not a fan of the “came back wrong” trope, especially when it comes to women, I’m interested in how they are going to do justice to Janet van Dyne.

She and Hank were originally going to be a part of the first Avengers movie, until it was confirmed that Scar-Jo’s Black Widow would be a member, and you know the rule: you have to start off with one woman first and then add in more, for reasons.

Regardless, I’m excited to see what role Janet will play in the fight against Ghost (played by Killjoy‘s actress Hannah John-Kamen) and what kind of mother-daughter team ups we will get from Janet and Hope.
