A Lesson From The Adjustment Bureau: Ladies Will Go To Action Movies

The Adjustment Bureau has mostly been marketed as an Inception-esque action drama, but, little did we know, the movie is actually mostly a romantic thriller about the struggle against the mysterious forces who control your fate with love as the ultimate goal. Go ahead, check the Wikipedia article.

While the people behind the film’s marketing tried to pull the ol’ genre bait and switch, they were unable to keep the true girly nature of the film’s story from leaking.  And what happened?

Women made up a significant box office pull that gave The Adjustment Bureau the #2 spot in the box office this weekend, trailing only the age-gap bridging Rango.

From Vulture:

Thanks to word of mouth on its romantic underpinnings, more than half (53 percent) of the Adjustment audience was the fairer sex, and three-quarters were over the age of 30.

So take heart, Hollywood, and stop trying to pull the wool over our eyes with your trailers. Women will go to action movies.

I imagine more of those ladies went because it was a Matt Damon movie, rather than for its romantic underpinnings.

Personally, I am female and I love action movies as long as there is substance to the story. Romantic or otherwise, I do need more than big explosions. I also do not usually waste my $$ on cliche rom-coms at the theater. Those I rent and watch at home with a gallon carton of ice cream when my husband is not home. ;)

AND I LOVE action adventure movies especially if it has kick butt women. ;) So Hollywood, stop having teenage males pick your movies and start catering to the rest of us. :)

I not only LOVE action movies, I want to make them one day. In fact, if we can throw sci-fi into that mix, EVEN BETTER. If it’s funny and maybe has a bit of romance in it too, I’ll do it for free.

I have absolutely no interest in this film. Unless they’ve managed to pull off the very strange (for K Dick… well the K Dick stories I’ve read so far) religious elements of the story with any sort of subtlety, which I doubt they have.

This is not going to do anything that Dark City hasn’t already done… and Rufus Sewell is ten times more awesome than Matt Damon.

Child of the late 80′s, early 90′s checking in; give me explosions, martial arts, one-liners, guns and maybe a jet charged car/cycle chase and I’m happy. If it happens to have a detailed plot that’s a bonus XD

I enjoy action movies far more than my husband does. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been burned by some brainless wonders. But if it’s fast and fun I’ll like it. This one sort of slipped under the radar for me. Might have to check it out.

I went and saw it this weekend and I actually knew what it was about – I heard about the bait and switch. But I used that bait and switch to get my boyfriend to see it with me…sucker…
