I See What They Did There

Warning: This is Not a Trailer for Brave

It’s a trailer for Kiara the Brave, produced by GoodTimes Entertainment, a company that became kind of notorius for producing direct-to-video knockoffs of Disney movies suspiciously close to the release date of those movies in the ’90s. But hey, at least they’re not Video Brinquedo, who so far have just happened to put out Little & Big MonstersThe Little CarsRatatoingTiny RobotsWhat’s Up?: Balloon to the Rescue!, and The Frog Prince just when Monsters vs. Aliens, Cars, Ratatouille, WALL-E, UP, and The Princess and the Frog were hitting theaters.

More heroines is always a good thing, but I invite you to take a look at the production value and dialogue here and try not to be amused.

At first I thought the soldiers were line dancing….then figured out they were supposed to be marching.

Ratatoing is one of the more incomprehensible things I’ve ever seen. You think it’s just standard copying, but it just … wow.

I honestly thought we were gearing up for a “Be Prepared” style musical number there. Better this way, a song and dance would probably be one trauma too many.

Not available in my country. Sigh.

Just think how many kids will be dashed this Christmas, opening that eagerly awaited, DVD-shaped present, only to find this crappy knockoff, because Meema and Peepa couldn’t tell the difference between it and the real thing.
    Happens every year.

The uploader has not made this video available in your country.

(Dear mods, can you please delete ^^ and this? I can’t figure out how to on my own, and I’m a little annoyed that for some reason my full name’s there. That’s what I get for trusting facebook with anything, apparently. *glares tiredly*)

I’m tempted to watch some of these just to see how bad they are. I know The Frog Prince and What’s up? are on netflix. Hmmm…maybe I’ll have a cheesy animation night.

Kiara the Brave isn’t a Brave knockoff at all! It’s retitled to capitalize on Kiara’s passing resemblance to Merida, but this is a 2011 Bollywood cartoon originally known as Super K. Kiara is a secondary character with little involvement. The real protagonist is Superkloud, the result of a botched spell to take over the world.

Kiara the Brave is worth watching on its own cracked-out merits, but don’t go into this expecting strong female characters. Heck, there are barely female characters, *period.*

My favorite part was discovering that Mesmerizor, the Gandalf knockoff, basically hangs out in the Metaverse from Snow Crash all day long.
