TSBranch’s Superheroic Redesigns

You might recognize the style of Tsbranch from their fancasting of a New 52 Outsiders, DC Comics’ occasional superheroic covert ops team, as an all female group. The lineup was so awesome from a diversity standpoint that it was immediately obvious that it was not something that would come out of DC these days: with Wonder Woman, Batwoman, Rene Montoya as the Question, Starling, and Scandal Savage, the five person team included two women of color, three lesbians and one bisexual woman. It also unbenched two fan favorite female characters who have not, so far, been reintroduced into continuity following the reboot.

So yeah, lets check out some more of their art.

WW and the first bat character were my favorites

Cool. My vote goes to Cassandra Cain.

I like the Power Girl and Cassandra Cain redesigns a lot, but I much prefer THIS Supergirl redesign to that one: http://tsbranch.deviantart.com/art/Supergirl-345660326 It’s like the current New52 design only without the stupid lower half.

All their amazon designs (Diana, Donna,Cassie, Artemis and Hippolyta) are really good.

    Huzzah for real pants!

Holy F! That Cassandra Cain redesign is beautiful! Can we have her back DC? Pleeeeeeease???!!!

Some of them look a little too visually busy for my tastes, but they do seem like better versions of the New 52 aesthetic then what’s actually in the comics.

Storm’s reminds me of Quarian suits from Mass Effect. I really like the Wonder Woman. I may actually do it for Balti-Con….

I’m getting more and more convinced that the New 52 is the worst thing to happen in comics in my life time. After I complained in another thread that Green Arrow in Arrow didn’t really feel like the character I knew from the comics, somebody pointed out that the current incarnation of the character didn’t feel like Green Arrow either. To know what he was talking about, I picked up am issue at the library. Eeeeessshhh!!!

Anyway, most of the above designs are too busy for my taste. The best superhero costumes are simple enough to be remembered after one viewing.

  • Thomas Hayes

Everyone tells me that any issue of New52 Green Arrow before #17, when Jeff Lemire took over writing and pretty much re-rebooted it, is absolutely awful.

And yes, I agree with that simplicity thing, although I do think these are very creative.

I have a hard time figuring out of it always Bad, or if sometimes it’s Horrible and sometimes it’s just Not What I’m Used To, but…I’d say it’s a fair assessment that most of the nu52 characters don’t feel like themselves. On the large and small scale. (I’m still miffed about Trickster becoming some amalgam of James and Axel, and somehow losing the charm and uniqueness of both of them for a generic bad guy.)

On one hand, this happens a lot in comics–things get reimagined. On the other hand, it’s usually not such a sweep of every character’s personalities. On the third, mutant hand, people who’ve never read comics before don’t know that Oliver Queen is “wrong” (though they might pick that up about better-known heroes like Superman), and if they get enjoyment out of it, it seems petty to complain that it’s not what *I* want to enjoy. On the prehensile tail…I miss my “old friends.”

    Mohawk Storm is best Storm.

I feel exactly the same way. I’m 36 years old, which is older than the target public but way too young to go on a “it was better in my days” rant.

Still, things WERE better in my days! I can see that Azarello’s Wonder Woman is not a bad comic (even though I prefered the previous version) but I have problems understanding how anyone could like anything else of what I read.

I only 3/4 of the first issue. Absolute garbage.

  • Harrison Grey

The Cassandra Cain is awesome, but there’s far too many lines on… all of these.

  • http://www.commonplacebook.com electrasteph

Love wonder woman and Cassandra Cain a lot. And Starfire – great version. Sexy, still conveys the character, but not soft-core porn the way that DC is having her drawn now. Power Girl is a bit of a disconnect with me. I think the boob window is a bit too iconic at this point to move away from it. (And it’s never bothered me.) If they’d leave it and make the rest of the costume more no-nonsense and badass, I’d be happy.

That is probably the best Black Bat design I have ever seen.

Storm’s mohawk needs its own spin-off series.

  • Jamie Jeans

Cass Cain as Batgirl wins my vote as the best, wtih runner ups for Storm and Wonder Woman.

I am getting really tired of the Jim Lee “Put Armour On Everyone Even If They Don’t Need It” style the artist made for Supergirl… seems really dumb when one considers she has no armour on her legs. Which is it going to be? All armour for Supergirl or none at all? Heck, the design before the Nu52 was improved dramatically by giving her bike shorts beneath the skirt.

Emma Frost should ALWAYS wear white, current costume be damned!
Wonder Woman & Storm are the best.
Cassandra Cain would be 20% cooler if she also had bat-ears.

  • Travis

    Wonder Woman: Looks Great

    Storm: Meh

    Supergirl: Eugh

Rogue: Isn’t that what she’s wearing now?

    Batgirl: Needs a cape

    Death: Looks like Death

White Queen: Doesn’t look right not wearing white

    Power Girl: Unrecognizable

    Ravager: Badass

    Starfire: What’s with the headgear?

Stephanie Brown: Is that a redesign?

  • Kathryn (@Loerwyn)

Why the capes? Why? Why? WHY?! If you’re going to try to improve superhero(ine) design, which I assume is what’s happened here, then for the love of all that’s unholy, drop the capes!

  • Bam Bunting

Wonder Woman looks like she was born to thump you in the face.

I’m getting more and more convinced that the New 52 is the worst thing to happen in comics in my life time.

Which means you must have been born after All-Star Batman and Robin, The Boy Wonder.

The Power Girl and Cassandra Cain ones are my favourites too. Especially the Power Girl, which is way better than both her current and recent redesigned costumes. I prefer the Supergirl one with the pants as well, thanks for the link to it. :3

That was a terrible comic, but it was only a comic. There was no lasting consequence except bad memories.

  • http://www.spaceunicorn.net Jayme

I’d give DC money for that Wonder Woman.

  • http://www.spaceunicorn.net Jayme

I see that about Storm. Ravager’s is almost Zaeed from Mass Effect. May be why I like it so much.

  • Curuniel

Came here to post that Storm’s outfit looked inspired by the Quarians and Tali’s suit, I’m glad I thought to scroll down and see if someone else had said it first!

Hah, Rogue looks like a character straight out of Mass Effect! Not complaining!
