Killer Computer Johnny Depp Is Coming For Us All In AI Thriller Transcendence [VIDEO]

Transcendence is the first feature-length film by frequent Christopher Nolan cinematographer Wally Pfister, who’s enlisted Nolan regulars Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy for his directorial debut. Also in the cast are Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, and Kate Mara. If you want to see JARVIS and Maya Hansen turn Captain Jack Sparrow into a computer, this one is for you.

Under the jump you’ll find several teasers for the film, in which Depp, Freeman, and Mara argue whether superintelligent computers are OMG THE BEST THING EVER or the imminent destruction of mankind.

I’m having a difficult time getting past the fact they’ve taped a bunch of USB cords to Johnny Depp’s head. What.

i’m just perpetually annoyed that pretty much every movie about science has to be about how dangerous it is. i mean, yeah, people making awesome discoveries and doing good with them doesn’t exactly make for dramatic tension, but that whole “man was not meant to meddle” bit gets way old.

I’d love to see a movie where the technologically actually saves the day and the anti tech crazies are actually portrayed as villains/psychos rather than misunderstood martyrs. I’m sure a movie like that is out there, not that I can think of one at the moment.

Ruh roh Shaggy, looks like we meddled in god’s domain again!

I get that everyone wants to make their own Frankenstein and that’s fine. But I have to admit I’m starting to grow weary of this kind of techno-fear thinly disguised as cautionary tales of human hubris.

I was discussing this with a co-worker the other day and it came to my mind that one of the things I’ve genuinely appreciated about the Marvel Avenger’s films is that they tend to use super science on fairly even footing as the cause and solution to conflict.

I think there is gonna be a parody of that scene in the near future, with a comedy relief character believing if he tapes a bunch of USB drives to his head he will be transported into the computer.

This actually looks promising and chilling. I think I can forgive Rebecca Hall after Iron Man 3 for this.
