Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland Casts Its First Actress

The Future Is Now!

Tomorrowland is a movie shrouded in secrecy, being put together by Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof, two names that many folks would follow to any movie theater even if they weren’t working together. We’re interested in it not the least because if rumors are to be believed, while George Clooney and Hugh Laurie are playing major characters, neither are playing the lead. In fact, the lead, and both of the two remaining main characters will be played by young women. Those rumors stand supported with the announcement of Raffey Cassidy in the role of a butt kicking robot girl.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Raffey Cassidy, the English actress who played a young Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsman, is set to star opposite George Clooney in Tomorrowland, Disney’s top-secret feature project being directed by Brad Bird…

Cassidy will play a young girl robot who has been around for decades. Also a key factor: She knows several fighting styles. She has a previous relationship with Clooney’s character, a bitter inventor.

I kinda wish THR had chosen different words than “a previous relationship,” but likely all this means is that Clooney’s character will have invented/built/repaired Cassidy’s character at some point. Our last real look at any kind of plot for Tomorrowland, which is intended to be a story grown out of the Tomorrowland attractions at Disney parks (presumably much in the same way that the Pirates of the Carribbean franchise was grown out of the Disney World ride of the same name) came when some casting papers were released. A single sentenced outlined an aging genius inventor character, a “pre-pubescent” robot girl, and a teenage girl as the adventuring characters who would be trying to find a way to Tomorrowland in order to save Earth. THR describes it now as “being in the vein of Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

Perhaps we can expect a casting announcement for that teenager soon?
