Things We Saw Today: The Triumphant, Geeky Return of the Scrunchie

This is just one use for a printed out 3D Hilbert curve. And what better than to resurrect hair accessories of the ’80s and ’90s by making them geek-friendly? (via Boing Boing)

When The Avengers opens on May 4, moviegoers choosing to see it in 3D will have their choice of Avenger-themed glasses. This is what they’ll look like, and they’ll cost about $5. (via Spinoff Online)

  • Did you love that upside-down kiss between Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in Spider-Man? The new Spidey, Andrew Garfield, is promising an even more amazing one in The Amazing Spider-Man. And he practiced on his hand. Yes. Andrew Garfield made out with his hand. (via Blastr)
  • Quite a few women took top directing honors at Sundance, and this is excellent, excellent news! Now, if they can just break into the mainstream, maybe we can improve on those dire numbers of female directors that we’re always hearing about. Congratulations, Lauren Greenfield (director of the documentary The Queen of Versailles), Ava DuVernay (Middle of Nowhere), Alison Klayman (Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry), Maria White (The Debutante Hunters), and all the other winners! • Does NPR — NPR! — have a gender bias against female authors? Many female authors think so, and the numbers are pretty disheartening. (via The Boston Phoenix)
  • National Geographic is putting the spotlight on the women they cover, including primatologist Jane Goodall and medical researcher Hayat Sindi, pictured below.

Scrunchies need resurrecting?  But… but… I never stopped using them! :O

I know, same here, and I refuse to ever stop!

Ummm…Why are there no Black Widow themed glasses? WTF

    • Angel S.

If scrunchies go out of style, I will be perpetually unfashionable …

oh wait … I already am.  No worries then.

There’s no Hawkeye either, which is extra odd considering I think he actually has classes in the film.

    • TKS

It’s also extra odd considering Hawkeye is awesome.  Also, looking at the source material, he has been a more consistent Avenger than any of the rest of them.

As an Asian with impossibly straight (and limp) hair, the only thing I can really do with a scrunchie is a ponytail. Any of the styles that the scrunchie purports to enhance (like the braided bun at the top) was never a possibility for me. So even if I think that new one is awesome, there’s nothing I can really do with it. :(

I have a feeling it’s because they believed that only guys will buy these glasses, and that dudes might think that buying the Black Widow themed one will label them girly men, which is so ridiculous.

On the other hand, if there were a Black Widow pair, I’d want to buy those for solidarity–you know, to support the ladies in the superhero trade. I’m at least pretty sure that they won’t make hers pink. (I’m SO digging the Thor ones, though)

      great article

They’re also going with ones who have already had a franchise movie. The more familiar issue. I’m more thinking, “DAMMIT LETS GET A BLACK WIDOW MOVIE.”

First off, the “Thor” glasses look like “Spidey” glasses to me, but what do I know?

Second, I’ve lost count of the number of times Neil Conan or some other idiot host on NPR has patronized his female guests. Some of them come just short of avuncularly drawling, “Yes, dearie,” during their interviews; I expect to hear the sound of them patting the woman’s head in the studio. I spend a lot of time alone at home, and NPR helps me stay sane. But by the gods, some days I want to smack that radio silly! Grr.

But that scrunchie looks like it should be nowhere near hair. Ever.
