Things We Saw Today: Here’s How We Do Caturday

Updated: Apparently, yesterday’s Catwoman picture was a fake. We instead offer this from bot. (via DC Women Kicking Ass)

Gaming Angels is talking about the new bakeware collaboration between Marvel and Williams-Sonoma and while they look wonderful, we are both not thrilled with the lack of female characters. But Marvel-themed cookies sounds like loads of fun.

DeviantARTist Skottie Young has an entire series of Darth Vader, as a kid, doing evil kid things. Like levitating a most unimpressed cat. (via Geek Tyrant)

Dinosaur blogger Brian Switek has a request of Steven Spielberg when he makes Jurassic Park 4: Please make sure the raptors are the real villains. And that they have feathers this time:

… [T]here had better be feathers on the new raptors. Not just a few silly quills like in Jurassic Park 3. The scientific evidence is unambiguous on this point, and a feather-covered Velociraptor would be a wonderful culmination of Alan Grant’s little soliloquy at the start of the first film. The time has come for feathered dinosaurs. Don’t let us down.

We end on this: Turret cosplay. (at Fashionably Geek)

Hathaway’s costume does seem to follow the “form follows function” ethos of the current crop of Batman movies, but I kinda hoped there’d be a cat cowl.

The catwoman is a fake!  I knew that costume was very Lara-esque.

Re; the raptors having feathers… will they also be chicken-sized?  You know, since we’re going for realism here.

Looking at the cookies, I don’t have the issue. Right now those are the movie tie-in cookies. Each one of those. Also..those is some ugly cookies. Delicious but tastey. Also, I refuse to frost Spidey’s face that way, black costume.. so much easier than perfect piping. ARGH.

Not to sound slightly Didio-esque, but which female heroes would you want to see in a set of six (hideous) mini-cakes (and they must be cakes if they’re that thick and baked in a mold)? Which have both the name recognition and physical recognition factors? Even the most well known female heroes are lacking the requisite iconic head (heh). And anyway, note that the fleshy bits of these heads are cake, not icing, and they look… creepy. I’m not saying that female characters don’t warrant recognition — it only reflects poorly on Marvel that they don’t have any truly iconic female characters. DC mini-cakes could have Wonder Woman and Catwoman too, if they wanted, not to mention Supergirl or Batgirl — they’re ALL more iconic to the non-comic-reading public than any female Marvel hero.

Rogue. Mystique. Scarlet Witch. Okay, not all heroes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=742530231 Amanda Jean Carroll

None of them are as iconic to the non-comic-reading public as Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Supergirl or Batgirl. I’m not saying they aren’t important in the Marvel Universe. If you went and asked people to identify pictures of them on the street, only people who had seen X-Men movies would recognize Rogue or Mystique, and only people who read comics would recognize Scarlet Witch. Nearly everyone would recognize the DC heroines mentioned above.
Admittedly, much of this is due to their associations with hugely popular male heroes.
Still, I’ve seen mass market notebooks and t-shirts and even underwear with pictures of these ladies. DC characters simply have a recognition factor that most Marvel characters don’t. That doesn’t make DC characters any better, or anything. They’ve just had Warner Brothers to handle licensing.  Scarlet Witch has the iconic head shape, though. Rogue and Mystique would be hard to tell from any other female in mold form. You would have to rely on coloration. Okay, that was kind of overblown. Sorry ’bout that.
