aigue-marine looks badass as Stephanie Brown as Batgirl. (Geeks are Sexy)

Hey, it’s Russel Crowe as Jor-El. Not gonna lie, I was hoping for a dorky headband. (The Daily Blam!)

Andrew Kolb’s Walking Dead art makes me sad, and I don’t even watch the show. (Kolblog)

Most of the new Avengers pic posts We Saw Today had familiar pictures, but we were delighted to see some Nick Fury Love. (Empire Online)

I’m starting to wonder if the whole sexism scandal is just brilliant viral marketing on the part of DC?

Think about it. Every feminist blogger in the western world complaining about how much T&A is in the comics, complete with pictures, and major publications reporting on the issue? Best free advertising ever, if your target demographic is dudes who like female objectification.

I honestly don’t think it was intentional. Yes, they fully meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator and pander to guys who need to ooggle bewbs. I don’t think they -intended- to be sexist, heck, they might have thought they were being very progressive in having two characters ‘claim their sexuality’ (pity that means ‘young straight male fantasy version of female sexuality’).

Whatever benefit they’ve gained in this sudden infamy I don’t think it will improve their numbers for long. Without quality stories even the worst mouth breather will grow bored and move onto things with more meat. This is mostly in reference to Red Hood which, even excised of sexism, was just a dull book.

I guess I’m referring more to their dismissive response to the scandal, rather than the creation of the sexist comics in the first place. I don’t believe for a second they ACTUALLY thought writing women who “claim their sexuality” was progress. They might be panderers, and subconscious sexists, but I’m sure they know when they’re bullshitting.

What I mean is, I think they realized the Red Hood series was coming out dull, so they leant on the sex appeal angle a little harder, and when that created a lot of media buzz, they didn’t exactly do all in their power to avoid controversy. Like you said, without the sexism, it’s lousy anyway. Better, from a marketing perspective, to have CONTROVERSIAL! SEXUAL! than just a dull product (See also: Barb Wire).
