Today in Unfounded Rumors: Potential [SPOILER] Cameo in The Wolverine

We’ll file this under: Meh, possible. There’s a rumor floating around that a certain character familiar to the X-Franchise might be making a special appearance in The Wolverine. So who does this mystery cameo belong to? Beware: Under the jump (and in the comments) lies a spoiler.

That would be Jean Grey, played by Famke Janssen. It was reported on the blog We Got This Covered that Janssen flew into Sydney, where The Wolverine is currently shooting, for the cameo last week. I’m taking the news with a heavy (read: boulder-sized) grain of salt as they don’t list any sources or corroborating evidence, but it certainly would be interesting if Grey did pop up. Fitting, too: Wolverine’s cameo in X-Men: First Class was a fun little moment that got a lot of people talking, so it makes sense that 20th Century Fox would want to do something similar with The Wolverine.

It’s also generally assumed that Janssen, Sir Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman et. al. will show up in X-Men: Days of Future Past, thus tying the original X-Men trilogy and X-Men: First Class into one nice, time travel-y package. If Fox does intend to do that, referencing Jean Grey in The Wolverine could be a means of looping Wolverine’s stand-alone movies into the larger picture. A network of interlocking cameos worked well for The Avengers and its various movies, anyway.

Not knowing much about the original X-Men canon, I’ve no clue how Jean Grey could fit into The Wolverine if this rumor proves accurate. Clue me in, readers?

I don’t see how or why they would tie in the Wolverine standalone movies with the rest when First Class went to some lengths to erase the whole mess of X-Men origins: Wolverine.

That’s the exact opposite of sense…

X-Men Origins: Wolverine? Is that a movie that exists? I don’t remember that. Nope. Nuh-uh.

Even taking Origins out of the equation, if The Wolverine does well you know there’ll be sequels to it. If that is the case, I can see WB trying to tie the three sub-franchises together all Marvel-like.

I would feel more excited if the X-men universe weren’t so &^%$#$! and convoluted.

she wouldn’t fit in for original marvel canon at all, but at the same time, that hasn’t stopped them from doing anything that’s happened in any of the x-men movies (even the good ones). I accept it as an alternate universe and move on.

Well, Clairemont’s story was written before Jean was re-introduced to the Marvel Universe after the Dark Phoenix Saga, so she has no actual role in that mini-series.

If they’re setting it as a sequel to Origins, happening before he links up with the X-Men, then Jean’s still alive, so they could write whatever they want to have her show up, even in a brief way. The floor’s pretty much open for Marvel to do whatever they want with the movie adaptation. She could be someone he interacts with, or she could be a vision of the future, if they decide to directly link the movie into the beginnings of the original trilogy.

But based on the original material, no. Jean’s dead and Logan’s not really thinking about her.

i honestly have no clue how they’re going to tie this together into their movie canon timeline. considering the fact that jean didn’t know wolverine in the first x-men movie, it would be kind of odd for them to use her for the cameo, unless it’s a much younger version of her character, but even then, it’s a bit of a stretch. then again this movie franchise has clearly shown that it doesn’t give much thought to continuity.

Didn’t X3 get officially retconned? Or was that just a very good dream I had? If so, the movie could take place whenever. But if it takes place before the trilogy, she can’t interact with him, since she didn’t know him in that one.

I must say, its a 20th Century Fox property, and not WB.

Thanks, edited! Can’t believe I got my X-Men and Batman studios mixed up there.
