The Girls of Tumblr’s Monster Girl Drawing Challenge

  1. 1.Naga Naga

    By Amy Leigh Sloan.

Drawing challenges (when artists vow to draw according to a set schedule or list of subjects) come and go on Tumblr, which is quite the visual blogging platform, but this one caught our interest tightly and wouldn't let go. After all, girls don't get to be the big, powerful, scary or inhuman monster that often. (This post may contain some sideboob.)

Amy Leigh Sloan realized that certain behavioral aspects of the anglerfish necessitated this update.

You can read about those aspects them here.

Yokai is a collective term for monstrous figures of Japanese folklore. This one in particular is a futakuchi-onna, and if you've never heard of them before, you owe it to yourself to find out.

The Slime picture just reminds me of this.

I’ve been following this challenge for a while now and I absolutely love it. There’s so much creativity in each group. I am completely digging those nagas, centaurs and harpies up there.

I wish women were allowed to be kooky and frightening more often, instead of the ‘willowy elf maiden’ or ‘cat-eared gal’ that our gender is usually shoehorned in.

    I love Rosalarian.

This is encouraging. I have loved creatures/monsters since I was a little girl so I am usually drawn towards demi-human characters. I don’t usually have a whole lot of options if I want to play/see a lady character of this type though, as others have mentioned, so I’m glad to see people interested in it instead of just saying ‘ick’.

High five to any WoW Horde players who love the troll/orc/tauren women! ;)

And oh I just love that lady Satyr!
