The First Trailer for Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments

Cassandra Clare‘s The Mortal Instruments is the latest young adult fantasy series with a female protagonist to make it to the big screen. What do we think?

Me? I’ve played a lot of D&D in my day, so I’m going to think of them as Aasimar.

    Woo! Plagerism rules!

I’m pretty excited, even if the casting of Jace is a little off in my mind. Everyone else is spot perfect. John Rhys Meyers as Valentine! Lena Headey as Jocelynn!

I have high hopes that it will be as awesome as the book.

    Plagiarism? Details!

This website breaks it down pretty well: http://www.fanhistory.com/wiki/Cassandra_Claire's_Plagiarism but there’s an article on the The Daily Quirk, The Thin Line Between Inspiration and Plagiarism that’s also interesting.

Cassie Claire was a hugely popular Harry Potter fanfiction writer before she was published. She always incorporated uncredited quotes and dialogue snippets from other sources in her work, and she was caught plagiarizing an entire page-long passage of description from an obscure fantasy book. She was removed from a major fanfiction site for this, which led to her friends starting what became the largest Harry Potter fanfiction archive. Because of her prominence in the community, there was plenty of other drama around her and her friends, too. As there always is in a large, social community where some people become well-known and popular because of their work.
