I was holding out hope Peter Dinklage would be cast as Doctor Psycho in a Wonder Woman film but I guess an X-Men role will have to do…

Yesterday brought us the official news that the older versions of everybody’s favorite mutant parenting couple odd couple were up for Days of Future Past, the sequel to X-Men: First Class. That is, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart have both signed to the production. Today brings us news that another X-Men standby won’t just walk away with the movie’s only F-bomb and the summer’s best cameo in one sitting. This time he might be around a bit longer.

There’s only one thing that can make me feel bad about Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart sharing a screen again, and that is that X-Men III is officially still canon.

Back in July, we learned the name of the next X-Men film. They’re going with X-Men: Days Of Future Past, a storyline that involves a type of time travel. Speculation was this could bridge the gap (regardless of plot holes) between X-Men: First Class and the trilogy of X-Men films that came before it. We might finally have confirmation on that thanks to Sir Patrick Stewart who spilled the beans about his involvement at a recent convention appearance.

With a new official image from upcoming sequel prequel (?) The Wolverine surfacing all over the nerd ‘Net – not to mention announcements about the sequel prequel (ok, we need a word for these) to X-Men: First Class – it got me thinking about my favorite group of neurotic post-humans and how things are going for them at the box office. While the fact that we even need a word for the sequel to a prequel makes me want to burn my film degree and run screaming into the woods… it’s also a symptom of the larger diseases plaguing the X-franchise.
