  1. Worth Waiting For: Pitch Drop Experiment Started in 1944 Finally Comes to Fruition

Wait for it... wait for it... wait for it... there it is!

It's not the most famous "pitch drop" experiment in the world -- that's the original at the University of Queensland in Australia -- but the fact that hard pitch-tar is a viscous liquid has been definitively proven. Researchers at Trinity College in Ireland set up a web cam to catch a never-before-seen glimpse of a drop of the hard, black substance, which is almost two hundred times thicker than honey, falling through the funnel in which it's been sitting for almost seven decades.

  2. The Longest Running Experiment in the World has a Webcam, is Glacially Slow

In 1927, a University of Queensland professor namedĀ Thomas Parnell wanted to demonstrate the fluidity of extremely viscous substances. To that end, he melted pitch -- which is a form of tar -- and poured it into a closed funnel, letting it dry for three years. Now, pitch is hard when dry and will even shatter when when struck. However, after the funnel end was cut, the pitch began to drip with agonizing slowness. And 85 years later, it's still going.

  3. World’s First Hybrid Sharks Found Off Coast of Australia

Researchers from theĀ University of Queensland have found the first ever hybrid sharks hanging around off the coast of Australia and from what they can tell, the hybrids are robust and more apt to handle changing climates than either of their parent species. Researches found not one or two, but 57 of the hybrids, along a 2,000 km stretch of coastline that included areas too cold for some non-hybrid sharks to live. While there could be any number of reasons behind this hybridization, it's thought that it could be an adaption to climate change.
