Thomas Edison

  1. Glenn Beck Is Making A Movie About Tesla And Edison

Well, this could become a cult favorite.

Glenn Beck says he is tired of politics, he's tired of Hollywood, and he's tired of all the fame and glory being given to "bad man" Thomas Edison. It's the biased biopic that I never would have expected: Glenn Beck is making a movie revealing the darkness behind the (debatable) inventor of the light bulb. Presumably, GE will not be sponsoring.

  2. Hey Girl: Before Gosling, There Was Edison [Sponsored]

You know Edison the engineer, the inventor, the magnate -- but what about Edison the Internet romantic?

Yes, we’re already past peak Hey Girl saturation, but perhaps that’s why we enjoy GE’s Thomas Edison-inspired variation on it. It’s reminiscent of everything we loved about the original with a smart twist courtesy of one of history's most notable engineers and inventors. Edison’s no Ryan Gosling, of course, but hey, who among us is?

  3. Make This Happen: Indiegogo Campaign to Create a Nikola Tesla Animated Series

Two animation and science enthusiasts are trying to make every geek's dreams come true. The guys behind Wood Goblin Studios have an Indiegogo campaign to fund the pilot of a cartoon about Nikola Tesla. To make it even nerdier and more perfect, his sidekick is Mark Twain, and they travel through time battling Thomas Edison, because of course they do. My only question about this cartoon is why doesn't it already exist?

  4. Nikola Tesla Museum Might Actually be Happening; Science History Geeks the World Over Rejoice

Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes. Yes.

Ladies and gentlemen: We are one step closer to a Nikola Tesla museum. In case you haven't been following the efforts of The Oatmeal's Matthew Inman and the non-profit group previously know as Friends of Science East to turn the final laboratory of the eccentric genius and inventor of alternating current into the Tesla Science Center, here's a brief summary: In 2009 the Agfa Corporation, which owned the Long Island site on which Tesla's Wardenclyffe estate is situated, put the property up for sale. Using crowdfunding, Inman hoped to raise $850,000 to go towards purchasing the property, which was listed at $1.6 million. He breezed past that mark in six days and eventually went on to raise $1.4 million. And last Friday Friends of Science East, now known as the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe, officially bought the property. Take that, Thomas Edison Center.

  5. Thomas Edison’s Dry Cleaning Bill to Run $20,000

No doubt we can all appreciate a good historical artifact, but one of the problems with artifacts is that at some point, sentimentality and historical respect aside, they are just old things that sit around getting older. That's the trouble The Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange,  New Jersey has run into recently, as some of the linens from their collection of Edison memorabilia are starting to show their age. Namely, an American flag, one of Edison's original movie projection screens, and one of his last lab coats have all seen better days, and are in need of a little restoration. So while the Internet has to wrangle a posse of nerds to pass the hat just to protect the land for a Tesla museum, taxpayers will be footing the $20,000 bill for Thomas Edison's maid service, eight decades after his death.

  6. Start Out Your Day With the Only Video of Mark Twain in Existence, Taken by Thomas Edison

    Great Hera!

Mark Twain lived in a time long before Instagram, before Youtube, even before the true acknowledgment of film as both an artform and as a commercial possibility. He probably liked it this way, but for us used to the modern era it means we are sadly dereft of the pleasures of watching the famous author move around his estate in that crotchety way we can all imagine. Usually. There is, however, this: What is said to be the only existing motion picture of Twain, taken by Thomas Edison himself. (via Flavorwire)

  7. Today is Thomas Edison’s Birthday, Why Don’t You Learn Something About Him? [Video]

Besides his feud with nerd icon (nerdicon?) Nikola Tesla and having a middle name of  "Alva," what do you really know about Thomas Edison? Probably not much, and since it's his birthday it's only appropriate that you let Jeremiah Warren teach you a little something. Go on, learning is good for you.
