Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

A Guide to 8 Fictional Gumshoe Gals

I’ll be the first to admit that some of my most beloved detective characters were played by Humphrey Bogart. And even that’s probably rooted in my Raymond Chandler-Dashiell Hammett fanaticism. I have, however, been heavily influenced by a series of detective dames over the course of my life.

Dominating their surroundings in a variety of different ways, these women crack the case, every time. Let’s take a look at a few of my favorite ‘chick dicks’…

8 Favorite Literary Horror Heroines

Halloween’s about dressing up and eating candy (and, for many adults, getting incredibly drunk). But that doesn’t have to be all it’s about. Back in 2010 Neil Gaiman suggested a new Halloween tradition of giving away a scary book to a friend on that most spooky of holidays. Since then that basic idea has evolved into All Hallow’s Read, and we here at The Mary Sue are supporting it by highlighting eight of our favorite literary horror heroines. All of the books we’ve mentioned here—including one by Gaiman himself, which is only fitting—come with the TMS stamp of approval if you want to participate in the AHR tradition of book-gifting.

‘Tis the season for horror films, and when it comes to flicks that just make your skin crawl, it’s hard to beat The Silence of the Lambs. These behind the scenes photos from the film, then, are even creepier for how happy-go-lucky everyone looks. Well, everyone except for Ted Levine, who plays Buffalo Bill. He apparently didn’t break character when the cameras stopped rolling. But Anthony Hopkins is looking awfully chipper, even while wearing Hannibal Lecter’s iconic mask.

Jodie Foster Fronting Female-Centered Mob Drama Angie’s Body

Showtime is saying goodbye to two of its female-headed shows soon; Weeds airs the end of its eight season run this September, and The Big C will end with four hour-long episodes next year. The network won’t be completely bereft of shows with women in the lead role, however; Jodie Foster is developing a show that kind of sounds like the female Sopranos

Pixar Illustrator Depicts R-Rated Films As Children’s Books

Story Artist at Pixar Animation Studios, Josh Cooley, has done something seriously twisted. He’s taken some of our favorite, overly violent, R-Rated movies and turn them into pages of a theoretical children’s book. He’s called it, Movies R Fun
