The mummified remains of “Princess” Ukok, as the scientists named her, was discovered nearly twenty years ago in the Altai mountain range in East-Central Asia. Kept for all that time in Novosibirsk, Russia, it was not until very recently that she’s been revealed to the rest of us. But among the general wonder and fascination that always comes with finding mummified and ancient bodies, Princess Ukok has another: She’s covered in remarkably preserved, completely badass tattoos.

Although women have achieved a certain level of freedom to decorate their bodies as they wish in modern society, the scandal of getting a tattoo or a piercing wasn’t always limited to unruly teens going against their parents’ wishes. At best, the subject of strange glances on the street, and at worst, the subject of ridicule, tattooed women bucked societal norms in order to decorate their skin as they saw fit, paving the way for today’s inked chicks. While it’s not exactly nationwide, and, therefore, not yet what could be considered a “growing trend” in Japan, the mayor of Osaka recently mandated that all city employees — officials, teachers, etc. — admit to having tattoos, whether they are visible or not, as well as how long they’ve had them. Why? Because of the children. Uhhhh… What’s this now?

I like to believe that one day, he got sick of collecting souvenir spoons from all over the universe and decided to start getting inked instead. Because they tell stories! Peter Cooper is a storyteller and musician by trade, and a recent yarn is about his grandma. I know what you’re thinking: what fate has befallen this woman that Peter Cooper has written an entire song about her (and performed with Eric Brace)? Actually, she’s fine. Cooper’s Grandma-in-Song is merely a gigantic and devoted fan of Batman, and the way she chose to express her fandom? Grandma has a Batman tattoo. Slow clap, Grandma. Slow clap. You go on with your bat self.

Okay, so, as the resident heavily-tattooed lady at The Mary Sue (Jill sports a couple, I sport over 20), stories about geek tattoos elicit all kinds of reactions from me. Oftentimes, my reaction is joyous, because there is nothing more beautiful than waving one’s geek flag in the form of a gorgeous, well-thought-out work of body art. However this story did not make me feel joy. It made me feel annoyed. At a wasted opportunity. And at carelessness. Tattoos are a commitment, and this person got the tattoo above, of Edward Cullen from Twilight, while blindfolded, on a bet. The good news is that it was covered up with something spectacularly geeky and far superior. The bad news is that this happened in the first place.
