Kiki’s Delivery Service is Getting A Live-Action Movie

Don’t be fooled by the image from Studio Ghibli’s 1989 animated adaptation of the novel of the same name by Eiko Kadono. This Kiki adaptation will be based on that book, not on the cartoon, and, in fact, Studio Ghibli is not going to be involved.

From Up On Poppy Hill the Latest English Release from Studio Ghibli

Set in 20th century Japan shortly after World War II, From Up on Poppy Hill is based on the manga of (roughly) the same name, a peaceful coming of age/romance where a push for the new in anticipation of the 1964 Olympics lies in conflict with remembrance of the old. In other words, maybe something to watch after Grave of the Fireflies, when you feel like nothing will ever be okay ever again. The English voice cast includes folks like Ron Howard, Gillian Anderson, and Christina Hendricks.

Watch the Trailer for Giant God Warrior Appears In Tokyo, Studio Ghibli’s First Foray Into Live-Action

Studio Ghibli is perhaps one of the most famed animation houses in the world. Animation being the key word. The studio has never done a live-action film–until now. Their first will be the short film Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo, which will be directed by Neon Genesis Evangelion director Hideaki Anno, and the trailer of which can be watched above. The film–which was created entirely without CGI and in the style of old-school Japanese sci-fi–will feature creatures from Hayao Miyazaki‘s 1984 animated film Nausicaä of the Valley of the WindNausicaä focused on the title character’s struggle with “a kingdom that tries to use an ancient weapon to eradicate a jungle of giant mutant insects,” and was considered to be a landmark start for the studio.

It’ll be interesting to see where the studio goes with the possibilities of live action. We will say this: With their extensive use of miniatures, the trailer for their first foray into it already looks pretty impressive.

Next Ghibli Film Will Be “Realistic,” “Not the Sort of Work That Everyone… Can Relax and Watch”

While no stranger to big issues like war, death, conservation, loss or love Hayao Miyazaki‘s Studio Ghibli is known most well for packaging those concepts in movies that can be appreciated by all ages… even if some of the younger ones don’t necessarily see the significance of the socio-political message of Princess Mononoke, for example.

But Ghibli has made some more “realistic” films, and according to Miyazaki himself, his next one is going to go back to that earlier sentiment.
