Science: It’s a Girl Thing

Science: It’s Our/Your Thing, Also, The Future

Way back at the beginning of this summer, the European Commission’s Directorate General for Research and Innovation began a campaign of informational videos and advertising designed, they hoped, to normalize the idea of women in the sciences and get young laides interested in a STEM career. Their flagship offering, however, missed the mark by quite a bit. The video was almost a parody of its purpose, there was a significant backlash, and Science, It’s A Girl Thing was forced to give itself a hard self evaluation. I found the whole thing to be very disappointing, not least because the other videos they had in their flagship YouTube channel were exactly the right thing: well produced and edited microdocumentaries on the work of actual living female scientists and researchers. It seemed like their hearts were in the right place, but they’d stumbled on their first step.

After accepting critique, ECDGR decided to hold a contest for folks to film a new introductory video for their campaign, and the chosen winners will make you feel a lot better about them. Watch the first above (from France), and the second below (from Australia).

Remember that video, Science: It’s a Girl Thing? Yeah. It was terrible and the European Union Commission spent a lot of money making it. So a group of Bristol women getting their PhDs in neuroscience, psychology, psychopharmacology, and more decided to make a parody for a lot less. And it’s pretty great. The parody is called “Science: It’s a Thing.4.Girls” and some fellas even get in on the fun! The women suggest, “If you would like to do something practical to help women in science, why not buy a calendar here?”

Friday Facepalm: Science, It’s a Girl Thing

I’ve kind of got a thing for alliteration, and when I came up with the phrase “Friday Facepalm,” it seemed irresistible. The problem, of course, is that facepalmy-things have six other days of the week to happen. But today, the Science: It’s a Girl Thing campaign crossed my internet path, perfectly timed for maximum alliterative success. Science: It’s a Girl Thing is an effort by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Research and Innovation, a pan-European governmental oragnization, and its goal is to get young girls interested in science and more women into scientific careers.

So it’s really unfortunate that they also made this video. Go ahead and watch. Update: It appears the video has been taken down. Good move, Science: It’s a Girl Thing.
