  1. Anna Kendrick Reads Femslash, Wants Quvenzhané Wallis to Play Spider-Man

    Rejoice, BeChloe shippers.

I was varying degrees of disappointed and conflicted by Pitch Perfect 2 (look for our full review tomorrow), but regardless of the movie's many problematic elements, I still love that a comedy franchise about talented ladies getting shit done has found such a dedicated fandom... one that Anna Kendrick is about to make very happy.

  2. Review: Annie Just Isn’t A Fresh Enough Take On The Classic

Poor direction and uninspired musical numbers hurt this remake.

The new musical adaptation of the classic comic strip-turned-Broadway musical-turned-movie is an interesting beast. It’s an attempt to modernize the story of a tenacious little orphan who experiences a Cinderella story when found by the wealthy Daddy Warbucks. And while there is certainly something to admire about this new approach, and to bringing movie musicals back for a younger generation, there are two problems which prevent this film from transcending the big shadow of its predecessor.

    Once More With Feeling

At least I think it's the first. Either way, I'm excited to finally see Quvenzhané Wallis done up in her Annie costume along with Jamie Foxx (who we just saw in the first Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer earlier today), Cameron Diaz and Rose Byrne. 15. Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence, Beasts of the Southern Wild Pick Up Oscar Nominations

    Oh Hollywood

I'm feeling kind of chipper and awake this morning, and I think it's because the Oscar nominations were announced. As much as I believe they're just a meaningless mutual appreciation society for Hollywood types, every year around this time I get unspeakably excited about them. I think the Academy might be beaming radio signals into my head or something.

  16. Review: Beasts of the Southern Wild and Its Six-Year-Old Female Role Model

    Review

Last Tuesday, I saw Beasts of the Southern Wild in the afternoon and Brave in the evening. This resulted in A) me consuming far more popcorn than one probably should in a 24-hour period (but I don’t care, because it’s movie theater popcorn and I can’t be tamed) and B) me getting completely spoiled when it comes to seeing movies with well-rounded female protagonists. Seriously. My tolerance for arm-candy love interests assigned token tasks over the course of a movie so they can help the main character and have something to do while they look pretty *coughTheAmazingSpider-Mancough* is now below zero, because these movies have given me two perfect examples of how it should be done. Seeing as this isn’t a review of Brave, I won’t go on about how awesome a role model—or how awesome a character in general—Brave’s Princess Merida is. But seeing Brave and Beasts so close together really made me think about where Hushpuppy, the protagonist of the latter film, fits in with her fellow female protagonists.
