Disney Picks Quality Indie Directors for Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Makes Me Dread This Movie a Little Less

Or maybe a little more, really. Because Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, currently in negotiations to direct Pirates of the Caribbean 5, directed one of my favorite films of the past year, and if Pirates 5 is a suckfest that ruins their careers it’ll just make me sad.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Director Rumors Surface, Reminding Us That POTC 5 Is a Thing That Is Happening

Of all the movies coming out in 2015—The Avengers sequel and Star Wars: Episode VII primary among them—Pirates of the Caribbean 5 holds the distinction of being the one approximately nobody cares about seeing. OK, maybe I’m projecting. Maybe there are people for whom the one-two punch of At World’s End and On Stranger Tides didn’t kill the franchise. (How could you do that to Norrington?!)

But, for me, the rumor that POTC 5 is getting close to finding a director resulted in a hearty, disappointed groan.

I’m one of those people who thinks the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise should have ended a while ago but seeing as how they are cash cows at the international box office, they’re still being churned out. The most recent news on that front is a writer has been chosen for Pirates 5. His credits include Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull and Speed 2: Cruise Control.
