If there's one thing we here at Geekosystem are happy to promote, it's animated short films. Paperman is just wonderful, for example. The Oscars for the Best Animated Short Film category are looking tough to call at the moment thanks to how stellar all the nominees are. Adam and Dog by Minkyu Lee is a wonderful little short that's cropped up on the Internet now that it's been nominated, and you can watch the whole thing right here.
2012 was a weird year for film. That isn't to say there weren't some great ones, but even some of the greats were a little odd. The 2013 Oscar nominees were recently announced, and let's just say that they reflect this strangeness perfectly. Even so, there's a little something for everyone. Sure, there's a lot going on with the 85th Academy Awards that a number of folks won't care about. Not everyone's a cinephile, after all, but it's still pretty exciting to see Wreck-It Ralph, Brave, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and Django Unchained get nods.
In a historic first, the Academy broadcast this year's Oscar nominations live over the Internet. Unsurprisingly, Avatar got a ton of nominations (and deserved many of them) -- nine nominations overall, tied only by Hurt Locker. But a few of our other favorites, including Star Trek, District 9, and Inglourious Basterds, also did pretty well for themselves. List of nominations for the biggest categories after the jump:
