As it turns out, people are using the Internet more and more. Shocking, I know. It's like it keeps growing, with more content always being provided and access to the web becoming easier, or something. According to a recent report, North American Internet traffic has more than doubled over the past year, with Netflix accounting for 33% of streaming traffic across fixed networks. Another very real possibility is magic.
Next time you order that extra shot of espresso, know that you are continuing a tradition that has been around in America for thousands of years. Archaeologists recently discovered the residue of a highly-caffeinated ritual beverage known as "black drink" in pottery beakers recovered from Cahokia, the largest Pre-Colombian city North of Mexico. The trees used to produce the beverage, however, are not native to the region surrounding Cahokia and could have only been made available to the city by way of trade. Anthropologists believe that this discovery is indicative of a large North American trade network. Let that simmer as you enjoy that white chocolate mocha.
So Blackberry's have been experiencing an outage of sorts in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South America for the past few days. Now, the trouble has started moving to users in the U.S. and Canada. The problems include questionable email service and no access to Internet browsing. The issues started at the beginning of this week and haven't been improving On Tuesday, RIM reported that the issue had been solved, only to report later that they were working on it. Unless solving it involves speading the issues to North American users, things aren't looking good. RIM has released a statement explain that:
The messaging and browsing delays ... were caused by a core switch failure within RIM's infrastructure. As a result, a large backlog of data was generated and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service.
