Don’t get me wrong. Mitch Hurwitz‘s explanation for why you shouldn’t marathon the fourth season of Arrested Development, premiering on Netflix this Sunday, is really good. It’s just one I don’t expect many people already set on a binge to heed.

First it was announced that the new season of Arrested Development, produced by and airing on Netflix, will have 14 episodes instead of 10. And now the new episodes have a release date: May 4th. It’s happening, guys. It’s actually happening.
I hope that after a few years my beloved Community will get such nice treatment.

The saga of Arrested Development has been one of long odds, and more than that, it’s one where those odds have actually paid off for fans. Their long lost show is getting a movie… and a whole new season. Certainly that would be enough for Community or Firefly fan, but not for Arrested Development.
Because Arrested Development fans were expecting ten new episodes, and now they’re getting more.

There may be a need to set aside a significant block of time for the premiere of Arrested Development‘s new episodes — they are going to get up at you Netflix-Instant-style, all on one day. At a Netflix-sponsored event during the National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas, the video streaming/DVD service announced, along with series creator Mitch Hurwitz, that all 10 new episodes will premiere on the same day rather than over the span of two and a half months. Hurwitz even hinted at the possibility of doing additional seasons of the show beyond these 10 episodes. So, consider yourself to be “unavailable” that one day. We’ll understand, and we’ll let your loved ones know.

We know, we know. We keep covering the Arrested Development movie as if we don’t know it’s definitely going to happen, even though we know that it is, along with a new series that will be streamed exclusively on Netflix. (It is Definitely Happening in 2013.) However, we like to make sure that all of our ducks are in a row. In this case, the cast and original writing staff. Good news: all those ducks have signed on to write the new series and screenplay. They even have an office and parking spaces!

We would never lie to you about this: Late yesterday, news broke that Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz was shopping around an abbreviated series of the show — nine or ten new episodes — that will air on either Showtime or Netflix. Yes, you heard that correctly: Netflix. And also, new episodes of Arrested Development. And yes, the movie is still happening.

No, really guys: It’s going to happen. Probably. No, seriously. After all these years of conflicting reports and non-committal stars, Will Arnett talked about the Arrested Development movie on Marc Maron‘s podcast, WTF With Marc Maron, and said that the script is in the works.
