Shopping for a Halloween costume can be a somewhat disheartening experience for a woman. There’s the sexy nurse, the sexy pirate, the sexy Chewbacca (oh yes, it exists). But what if all you really want to do is dress up as an awesome lady, and not necessarily in a way that exposes your skin to the brisk October air?
There are plenty of options; you just probably won’t find them in your local costume store. So we at The Mary Sue have assembled our own list of geek girl costume ideas, split evenly between pop culture and history, the latter courtesy of Take Back Halloween, an unparalleled resource for those who A) like kick-ass ladies from history and B) want to know how to dress up as them.

Watch as Stephen Colbert points out that since Merida from Brave had the courage to resist an arranged marriage she didn’t want, she must be a lesbian, and thus a pawn of Pixar’s Gay Agenda. You know, because challenging traditional gender roles makes you gay. All joking aside, it’s actually a pretty common interpretation of Brave. That’s not to say it would be awful if Merida were gay (it would be awesome) it’s just that it misses the point of the movie — all girls, gay, straight, or otherwise, should be able to choose their own destiny. Perhaps no one got the memo about Merida putting off marriage until she actually figured out who she loved?

We’ve see a lot of fantastic clips, featurettes, and trailers from the upcoming Pixar movie Brave, but I think I can go on record officially saying this takes the cake. Read on to watch a brand-new spot from the creators of the film, wishing mom’s everywhere a Happy Mother’s Day with something we’ve not yet seen – a baby version of Merida. Brace yourself.

Ok, so we joke around here at The Mary Sue that I look like Merida from Disney-Pixar’s Brave but I’m bouncing up and down with glee now that I’ve see the women Disney has chosen to play her at their theme parks. Here’s a video of one of them filmed at Epcot Center but soon, she’ll head to the Magic Kingdom. According to Orlando’s Attractions Magazine, ” In a couple of weeks she’ll start appearing in the Fairytale Garden in Fantasyland, where guests will engage in archery lessons and other activities until it’s their turn to meet her. Joining Merida will be the three bear cubs from the film, who will also interact with guests.” Hit the jump for yet another castmember taking on Merida. The hair, my god, the hair!

We’ve been witnessing Princess Merida’s skill with a bow for a while (and even seen a real-life redhead doing the same) but now we know she’s a very well-rounded lady.
