10 Awesome Things That Happened at the Star Trek: The Next Generation 25th Anniversary Reunion

In 1987, Star Trek re-launched the franchise with a whole new series, Star Trek: The Next Generation. Not only did TNG show us the next generation of characters in the Star Trek saga, it brought in the next generation of Star Trek fans who would grow up with the series. I was just a little kid sitting on the couch between my original-Trekker parents when the show premiered. I never imagined that, twenty-five years later, I would be in the room with the entire cast as they reminisced about their TNG experiences at Grand Slam XVIII. Here are some of the best moments from the reunion.

Troy and Abed on a Staaaarship!

The need to watch The Next Generation has been on a low-level simmer in the back of my mind ever since I saw that episode of Reading Rainbow where LeVar Burton took elementary-school me on a tour of the set. This piece of fanart by Faith Erin Hicks might have just pushed it over the edge.

(There’s also a Tumblr—Troy and Abed in Engineering—devoted to the crossover. Worf is Ben Chang.)

Imagine What You'll Know Tomorrow

LeVar Burton Becomes A Musician Thanks To The Reading Rainbow Remix

Earlier this year, Star Trek actor LeVar Burton was able to secure the Reading Rainbow Twitter account (much like we just secured @TheMarySue) and we knew great things were on the horizon. The latest? PBS Digital Studios’ John D. Boswell remixed the classic opening tune to the show. If you really hate auto-tune you may not like this particular video but we think Mr. Burton sounds pretty rad.

Inside of a dog it's too dark to read

You Mess With Big Bird, You Mess With La Forge

I am personally outraged that any serious contender for the White House would target as part of his campaign the children of America in this fashion. Educators across the country, as well as millions of children and adults know that the programming on PBS has been responsible for significant improvements in education, literacy, math, science and life skills for generations of our children. PBS represents .00016% of our nation’s budget, yet this free resource benefits kids across all economic circumstances. Defunding PBS directly punishes the less fortunate by removing this trusted and extraordinary educational resource available to all…

But you don’t have to take my word for it… Make your own decision about how you feel about Romney’s campaign against PBS, and act.LeVar Burton.

To our nerdy selves, LeVar Burton is first and foremost Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge of the USS Enterprise. But to our inner children, he’s first and foremost LeVar Burton, host of Reading Rainbow, the third longest running kids series on PBS, behind Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood (and still alive and well today in best selling app form). And with the use of his Reading Rainbow catch phrase, you know he’s still got it.

Jimmy Fallon Sings The Reading Rainbow Theme Song in the Style of The Doors

Oh, Jimmy. We appreciate your silly song stylings. We especially enjoy them when it means we get to wake up to you singing one of our favorite childhood theme songs in a changed-up style. Of course, we can never hear this song without thinking of this scene, but we’ll also be adding this one to our roster of favorite Reading Rainbow covers.

Things We Saw Today: Lego Tank Girl

A Lego builder known as mahjqa recently took a Lego Friends set, and what I’m assuming are a lot of other sets, to create a Lego Tank Girl. Straight chillin’. Check out details of the build here. Don’t miss the video. (via The Beat) Now, what else did we see today…

LeVar Burton Secures Reading Rainbow Twitter Account To Promote New App

Star Trek: The Next Generation actor and host of the PBS children’s television show Reading Rainbow, LeVar Burton, has carved out a nice niche for himself on Twitter the last few years but he used the clout of his verified status, and 1.7 million followers, recently to commandeer another Twitter account for a very specific cause. @ReadingRainbow, previously held by another user, is now Burton’s to promote a Reading Rainbow app for the iPad.
