  5. Surrealists at Sanrio Censor Comic for Implying Hello Kitty Is an Actual Cat

Hello Kitty is an anagram for Kill the Toy. I know too much.

In a confounding new development, artist Karl Kershcl says that a Metroid-inspired strip he designed for a book featuring Hello Kitty art from illustrators around the globe was censored because, "Sanrio doesn’t want Hello Kitty associated with an actual cat in any way. "

  7. Update: Hello Kitty Isn’t a Human, Either

I can't take much more of this.

Yesterday the Internet (save for hardcore Sanrio fans—you'll have to forgive the rest of us) flew into an existential frenzy as it was revealed by a Hello Kitty historian in a LA Times interview that the famous Sanrio character is not to be referred to as a cat. But then... what is she?

  12. “Super-Alloy” Hello Kitty Mecha Will Out-Cute Everything [Video]

    Assuming Direct Control

Sure, it's a little long and it's only in Japanese, but this anime video about the new Hello Kitty mecha that Bandai is releasing to celebrate the 40th anniversary of both Hello Kitty and it's Chogokin "super-alloy" metal is pretty great. The only downside is that it makes me want to pilot my own Hello Kitty mecha. Are you following The Mary Sue on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, & Google +?

    Things We Saw Today

To create their Random Oscar Winner Generator, TIME took the IMDB keywords of the 233 movies nominated for Best Picture since 1970 and plugged them into an algorithm. My favorite is “A movie star and a film producer in the 1860s cope with fame and adultery,” because time travel. Share yours in the comments.

  18. Hello Kitty and Kiss are Teaming Up to Make Us an Animated Show

    I'll Allow It

There's no doubt that people like to take the distinctive silhouette of Hello Kitty and wrap it in the colors and accessories of other media properties, particularly ones with tones wildly divergent from "cute animal people doing cute things." Sometimes those mashups are even created by Sanrio themselves, like when they created Hello Kitty merchandise in the likeness of each member of the band KISS. And now, as Sanrio partners with KISS and The Hub television channel for Kiss Hello Kitty, a cartoon show, announced today, which is apparently already in production.

  20. Cartoon Characters Aren’t So Funny When They’re Skeletons

And Now For Something Completely Different

But they sure are interesting to look at. Artist Michael Paulus shows us classic cartoon characters as we've never seen them before - as skeletons. In his series "Character Study," Paulus looked at characters that have been around for decades with a scientific eye. He writes, "I decided to take a select few of these popular characters and render their skeletal systems as I imagine they might resemble if one truly had eye sockets half the size of its head, or fingerless-hands, or feet comprising 60% of its body mass." The results are a little macabre but definitely cool. You can purchase prints and originals in his Etsy shop. (via Bookoisseur)
