Hayley Atwell Confirms: The Next Marvel Short is About Peggy Carter

Hayley Atwell says Peggy Carter can do “everything Captain America can do but backwards, in high heels,” and we’ll get to see exactly what happened to her after the events of Captain America: The First Avenger. Or we will if we manage to get into that big hall at Marvel Entertainment’s San Diego Comic Con presentation this summer. Otherwise, we’ll have to wait until the DVD release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. So… that’s a really long time.

There’s been an online campaign for Peggy to be featured. People really liked her. So Marvel have made sure that as part of Comicon there will be a little kind of snapshot as to what Peggy’s actually really capable of, which was finished here and which was great fun. Hopefully, it will lead to other things. — Peggy Carter actress Hayley Atwell to The Age.

Marvel Entertainment has shown an interest in giving short films to secondary characters, and have already dedicated one to a fan favorite. Peggy Carter is a character who has yet to be given a kind of closure by either Captain America: The First Avenger or The Avengers (even considering deleted scenes), so it makes sense that they might give her some in a short. In the Age article the actress also confirms that she’d be totally down to play Lara Croft in a Tomb Raider movie, so that’s awesome.

A month ago, Hayley Atwell told an interviewer that she would not be returning for Captain America: Winter Soldier, and just a few weeks ago we heard that Emily VanCamp had been tapped for the role of Sharon Carter, the niece of Atwell’s Peggy Carter.

But it seems perhaps that Peggy Carter may not be as absent from Captain America: Winter Soldier as Atwell implied.

At long last, and with some lingering sadness, though at this point it seemed inevitable, Hayley Atwell, the actress behind Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger, has confirmed that she won’t be returning for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

“But Susana,” you say, “Winter Soldier is set in the present, where Peggy is like at least eighty. Did we really expect Hayley Atwell to play her?” Well, aside from the possibility of flashbacks or age makeup, there’s another wrinkle in the issue, that has everything to do with Peggy’s canonical descendant, Sharon Carter.
