We Asked, You Answered: The Mary Sue Readers Sound Off The Summer Movies of 2014

It seems like it was winter just yesterday, but already summer movie season is starting in the US with today’s release of a little movie called Captain America: The Winter Soldier. A ton of movies are coming out over the next few months, some that we’re looking forward to here at The Mary Sue (Guardians of the Galaxy), some that we’re… not (Transformers: Age of Extinction). But we got curious: Which ones are you most looking forward to? So we asked. What follows is a roundup of the 2014 summer movie season, ranked from the flick you’re are least anticipating to the one you’re most chomping at the bit for. We’ve included our thoughts as well, plus a general sample of the responses we got to each film. (Are you in there? Step up and claim your wit!)

Does the breakdown surprise you, or is it just about what you thought it would be?  Do you differ from the majority? Sound off in the comments.

And So It Begins

The First Trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Looks Promising

By which I mean there’s not a whole lot to it, but Rise of the Planet of the Apes was excellent and there’s a brief shot of Gary Oldman shooting something, so bring it on. Bring it on like Donkey Kong.

Planet of the Apes Fan Judy Greer Lives the Dream, Is Cast as the Female Ape Lead in Rise of the Planet of the Apes

I’m just going to go ahead and put the best part of Judy Greer‘s interview with Vulture about her Apes casting right up front: “It’s funny, because when I talk to my [Planet of the Apes-obsessed] husband about the movie, he’s like, ‘I don’t want to know! I do want to know! Do you think you should tell me? Don’t tell me!

Poor guy.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Casts Gary Oldman as the Leader of the Human Resistance

A fair number of big news items have popped up today. The Hobbit is being pushed back by five months. Tim Curry will be in The Clone Wars. Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe have some interesting post-Potter films lined up. But there’s only one thing that made me squeal at my computer. And that’s that Gary Oldman has joined the cast of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. This was my reaction.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Casts Jason Clarke As Its New James Franco

We already knew that James Franco probably wouldn’t be facing off against any damn dirty apes in Matt ReevesDawn of the Planet of the Apes, the sequel to 2011′s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. And now we know who’ll be fulfilling the role of ostensible-lead-because-they’re-human-but-really-we-all-know-Andy-Serkis-is-the-star-here: Zero Dark Thirty‘s Jason Clarke.

James Franco Might Not Be In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, But As Long As Andy Serkis Is Still There We’re Cool

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes might find itself James Franco-less. In an interview with MTV, the Rise of the Planet of the Apes star has said that he might not be in the movie’s sequel at all, or if he is, it might be in a very small role.

I’m OK with that. I don’t think anyone came out of the (surprisingly good) Rise of the Planet of the Apes, saying “Man, that James Franco did a good job.” I mean, he did. I think he did. I don’t really remember. The majority of my post-Rise thoughts were more along the lines of “Andy Serkis, YOU ARE A GIFT!
