Wally Pfister’s Transcendence, Starring Johnny Depp, Is Looking More Awesome By the Minute

We’re getting a surprising amount of information about the plot of the upcoming Johnny Depp-starring sci-fi flick Transcendence, considering it’s executive produced by the notoriously secretive Christopher Nolan and directed by Wally Pfister, a frequent collaborator of his. I remember that people were scratching their heads at what the heck Inception would be about even after the trailer was released. But courtesy of The Wrap, we now have a basic plot for the film… and it looks awesome.

Beware: If you consider basic plot information for a film that may undergo substantial revisions by the time it makes its way to your eyeballs spoilers, don’t click the jump, as they are unmarked. You’ve been warned.

I Guess I Can't Argue With That

The Honest Trailer Folks Turn the Lens of Cold, Hard Truth on The Dark Knight Rises [VIDEO]

Boy oh boy, ScreenJunkies had fun with this one. And I had fun watching it, so it’s all nice and balanced. Why was Bruce just hanging out in public after he’d supposedly died? He’s not exactly a low-profile dude. I’m sure Christopher Nolan framed it so the paparazzi were just off to the side.

Holy Rusted Metal Batman!

Yes, Marion Cotillard Had To Lie About Her Dark Knight Rises Role

Look, Marion Cotillard wasn’t fooling any well-versed Batman fan when Christopher Nolan cast her as a no-name character in The Dark Knight Rises. We didn’t exactly call her a liar as she flatly denied rumors before the film came out, but we knew she was lying. And we were right. And now MTV has officially called her on it. What do you think her response was?

People Are Saying Joseph Gordon-Levitt Will Be Batman In Justice League, We Shush Them

We often pass on stories where “unnamed sources” or “sources close to the production” are the main source of “facts.” Most of the time they turn out to be wrong and we’ve not only wasted our time writing about it but we’ve gotten all of you in a tizzy over nothing. Ourselves included. But we couldn’t let this one pass us by, particularly when you consider our deep love for all things Batman and near-obsessive defense of the character. “Sources” are saying Joseph Gordon-Levitt is absolutely going to play Batman.

Zack Snyder Talks About Superman’s Underwear, Or Lackthereof, In Man of Steel

Lots of controversy surrounded the removal of Superman’s trademark red trunks in both the comic book universe and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. The director had a few things to say recently about the decision plus a few words on the impending Justice League film.

What If Gotham City: The High School Years Was A Real Movie? Seriously. An Actual Movie You Could Watch. Here It Is.

So, you’re going to start watching this, figure out the general premise and go, “Ok, that’s cute.” Then you’re going to keep watching and think, “Huh. That was pretty clever.” But by the time you get to the end you’re going to be as convinced as we are that this is the BEST IDEA TO HAPPEN ON THE INTERNET (at least this week.) The execution is flawless. Seriously. After watching, I sat here for ten minutes wondering how to present it you all and was still left blown away. The awesomeness of this video CANNOT BE CONTAINED. Just stop reading and watch it now!

Cautiously Optimistic

Transcendence Is Shaping Up to Be a Nerd’s Dream Come True

There’s not much info out there on the upcoming big-budget sci-fi film Transcendence, the directorial debut of frequent Christopher Nolan collaborator Wally Pfister. That’s not surprising, really, given it’s being executive produced by Nolan, who’s famously tight-lipped about his own projects. It’s like he and Pfister, who’s shot every one of Nolan’s films since 2000′s Memento, have a bro code of secrecy. But while Nolan or Pfister probably won’t give too much away any time soon—except that it’s about ”a man who creates a computer that develops a malevolent awareness“—some bits of casting news have come out over the past few days that have been enough to make my nerd heart grow three sizes.

And Another One Bites the 3D Conversion Dust: Pacific Rim

I’d describe my feelings towards 3D in feature film as a big on the negative side of neutral. While I don’t think I will ever want to see a 3D movie where I’d actually like to invest myself in the characters and plot for the first time, I’m all in favor of 3D rereleases. There’s something magical about seeing a movie on a big screen in a dark theater full of other folks who love it, and I feel like 3D is a small price to pay, even it means I have to wear two sets of glasses. Case in point: I haven’t seen the original Star Wars on a big screen since I was eleven. And there are even some cases, like Tron: Legacy, where I feel that 3D enhanced (even if slightly) my experience of an otherwise (okay, perhaps “even still”) forgettable movie.

But my sympathy for 3D ends at it being applied to movies against the wishes of the director, and particularly with 3D post conversion, the laziest way of making 3D movies.

Theaters Saw Worst Summer Sales Since 1993 Despite Billion Dollar Blockbusters Like TDKR & Avengers

Just yesterday we told you Joss Whedon’s The Avengers pushed past the $1.5 billion dollar mark for global ticket sales. Today, we’ve found out Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises has officially become the 11th film to cross the billion dollar mark. Theater owners must be very happy, right? Wrong. Apparently 2012 has had the worst summer for ticket sales since 1993.
