James Hance Paints Firefly in Twenty Four Hours

Artist James Hance took it upon himself recently to paint a portrait of each member of the crew of the Serenity during a single twenty-four hour period, and succeeded. Even more impressively, he’ll be donating each original painting to Firefly themed charity group Can’t Stop the Serenity, for their annual auction to benefit Equality Now.

Prints will be available for anybody unable to get their hands on the originals, with a portion of the proceeds also going to Equality Now, so come on in and take a look at the rest of them.

The Washington Post Unmasks Batman (That Is, the Batman Who Got Pulled over On Route 29 Last Week)

This fellow here, who gives his name, when the officers finally ask and realize that they can’t just keep calling him Batman, as Lenny, was pulled over on Route 29 in Maryland two weeks ago, for driving without visible license plates. Turned out, he had all the right registration and the plates were in the car (having been temporarily replaced with Bat-symbols), and, with good humor, the officers let him off with a warning and let him get on his way to the Georgetown University Hospital to visit sick kids. And while the video served to amused a great deal of the internet, the Washington Post’s Michael S. Rosenwald happens to know Lenny personally, and managed to get the normally publicity-adverse Batman-impersonator to open up.

Gaskins was recently suspended from his high school. Why? Because the long hair he was growing to donate to Locks of Love violated school policy. Did we mention he’s a cancer survivor himself? Sigh.

(Some are actually for humans!) “But why would chickens need clothes?” you might ask yourself. Well, some hens who have been neglected or abused lose their feathers because of the stress. And these little sweaters help keep them warm until their feathers grow back. If you visit Little Hen Rescue, you’ll find a pattern for knitting sweaters for chickens.

Other organizations include The Snuggles Project (blankets for shelter animals), Afghans for Afghans, and Project Linus (“security” blankets for needy children).

The man above is Paul Jacob French, a native Australian who has committed himself to walking across his home continent in the name of charity. Namely, the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which aims to make the lives of ill children and their families more manageable and uplifting.
