Orphan Black Fan Starts Crowdfunding Campaign For Tatiana Maslany Award

Because Tatiana Maslany is an amazing actress and did not win an Emmy or Golden Globe for her depiction of EIGHT FREAKING CLONES on BBC America’s Orphan Black, one fan has decided to do something about it. Sarah Evans sent me a link to the Indiegogo campaign she started to get the actress her own special award – a Clone Club Award! “I want Maslany to have an award specifically from her fans,” she writes. “I am commissioning an artist to create a unique awards statue specifically for the fans of Orphan Black to give to her.” Evans is looking to raise just $2,000, which I think is an easily attainable goal for the series’ many dedicated fans. There will be one actual award statue for Maslany and up to three replicas for fans willing to shell out $500. Evans is also asking fans not directly send the actress info about the award, she’d like to surprise her with it. Check out more details and perks at the Indiegogo page.

May the Odds Be Ever in Your Favor

Selina Kyle and Whedon Win at the 39th Annual Saturn Awards

The 39th Saturn Awards were yesterday and it appears that Joss Whedon will be keeping his title as sci-fi, fantasy, and horror royalty.  Whedon won Best Director for Marvel’s The Avengers, beating out Ang Lee, Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson, William Friedkin, and Rian Johnson. Meanwhile, The Avengers won best science fiction film and Cabin in the Woods won in the best Horror/ Thriller category.  The Avengers just kept winning, with actor Clark Gregg winning best supporting actor for his role as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson. The Dark Knight Rises picked up only one win, Best Supporting Actress, for Anne Hathaway‘s much-loved turn as Catwoman. The odds were also in Jennifer Lawrence’s favor, and she won Best Actress for her work in the first installment in The Hunger Games series.

“Who are you wearing?”

It’s awards season, so in those moments where you can’t believe the tv guide said the broadcast started at seven and that meant an hour of actors being interviewed about their roles and actresses being interviewed about their dresses before you actually stand a chance of finding out who won best Hair and Makeup (it’s The Hobbit, seriously, thirteen dwarves), just repeat Madéleine Flores‘ comic to yourself. You can see more of her stuff here, and even buy it here. Yes, even her take on dressing for your body type.

Women and comics, women in comics, women of comics, however you want to look at it, they’ve been a big topic of discussion over the last year. Several sites (The Mary Sue included) like to spotlight female creators and issues in the industry when at all possible and one blog thinks it’s time to reinstate awards for the talented women out there. And yes, this is something we fully endorse.

Nebula Award Nominees That You Can Read Right Now – For Free

The coolest thing about the sci-fi literary awards these days is that a lot of the works nominated in them are short enough (and the writers are confident in new technology enough) to be available, whole, on the internet.  What follows are the complete nominations for the Nebula Awards, with links to the nine short stories, novelettes, and novellas that are running free on the internet, unfettered by sign-ins, Kindle purchases, magazine subscriptions, or instant streaming queues.
