One of the only bits of footage we still have of the final installment of the Doctor Who serial “The Tenth Planet” is of the First Doctor’s regeneration into the Second. That’s kind of crazy, because one, it’s the debut of the Cybermen, two, it’s the episode that introduced the idea that the Doctor can regenerate, which means that, three, it’s the final episode of the First Doctor, played by William Hartnell. No one’s really sure what’s happened to the BBC’s prints of the show, but the studio doesn’t have a print of it fit for broadcast. Planet 55 Studios, however, is creating an animated version of the final episode for the DVD release of “The Tenth Planet.” This is but a preview.
Like many of us, Angela Taratuta is a fan of BBC Sherlock. But unlike many of us, she decided to turn the series into a cartoon by redrawing screencaps from A Scandal in Belgravia. Beware: cartoony Sherlock feels!
This short and sweet chocolatey animation was put together by artistic pair Larry Moss, who took the photos, and Kelly Cheatle, credited as “Oreo stylist.” Do you think they had any leftover Oreo pieces when they were done? Do you think I could eat them?
And now I’m going to go eat lunch. And maybe Oreos.
From Apocalypse Now to Zero Dark Thirty (I admit I was really hoping for Zardoz), Evan Seitz completes his ABCinema series just in time for the Oscars this weekend.
I can understand if some of you aren’t familiar with Thunder and Lightning, the superhero daughters of DC Comics’ Black Lightning. They aren’t the most well-known superheroes and they don’t exist (so far) in the New 52 but they are pretty swell gals. Here’s a clip from an upcoming short on Cartoon Network’s DC Nation programming block with the two acting like sisters do. Interesting tidbit Sue from DC Women Kicking Ass pointed out: this clip includes mention of Grace Choi. Grace was a member of The Outsiders as well as Thunder’s girlfriend in the comics. If you stop the video on Thunder’s cell phone (or click over to see a screenshot at DCWKA) you’ll see the two are at least friends in this animated universe.
No, this video from 1946 isn’t perfect as far as feminism goes but I have to say, I’m surprised to find it so…not 1946? Though I guess I’m even more surprised Walt Disney Productions made a video about our periods at all.
