The Air Force’s First Female Fighter Pilot Becomes Wing Commander (It’s Kind Of A Big Deal)

Col. Jeannie Leavitt will go down in history as the U.S. Air Force’s first female fighter pilot. She made that achievement back in 1993 but can mark another big one down as of last week. She’s officially the first woman to take command of an Air Force combat fighter wing.

Evelyn “Mama Bird” Johnson, Record Breaking Pilot, Passes Away At 102

Above is a photo taken by the United States Air Force in 1957 of Evelyn Bryan Johnson at the Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport. Johnson, who went by the nickname “Mama Bird,” held the record for the most hours in the air by a female pilot. She passed away this week at the age of 102. Read on for this amazing lady’s story.

Help Get A Bronze Statue For The First Woman To Fly Solo Around The Globe

Geraldine “Jerrie” Mock hails from Newark, Ohio and made a historic solo flight around the world that landed in Columbus in 1964. The trip took 29 days, with 21 stopovers, and made Mock one memorable lady. Now, residents in her hometown, as well as other admirers, would like to honor her with a full-size bronze statue. They just need a little help raising the funds. And if you can believe it, Mock is surprised anyone would want a statue of a woman.

Janet C. Wolfenbarger Nominated to Become the Air Force’s First Female Four-Star General

Janet C. Wolfenbarger has been a Lieutenant General and vice commander of the US Air Force Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio since she was confirmed by the US Senate in 1999. She’s currently the highest-ranking female officer in the Air Force, and may soon become the highest ranking woman to ever serve in it. President Obama recently nominated her to be appointed to the rank of a four-star Air Force General, a position no other woman has ever held.

Gucci Girls Form An All-Female “Unmanned” Flight Crew For the Air Force

You’d think that with only one female Boeing KC–10 flight engineer in the U.S. Air Force, it would be hard to imagine an all-female flight crew. But with a little logistical tweaking, the Gucci Girls were formed, becoming a rare all-female operating a refueling tanker in the Middle East. The team also marks the first time that reservists and active duty personnel have flown on the same aircraft together. And, yes, they are making jokes about their “unmanned” refueling tanker.
