8 Favorite Literary Horror Heroines

Halloween’s about dressing up and eating candy (and, for many adults, getting incredibly drunk). But that doesn’t have to be all it’s about. Back in 2010 Neil Gaiman suggested a new Halloween tradition of giving away a scary book to a friend on that most spooky of holidays. Since then that basic idea has evolved into All Hallow’s Read, and we here at The Mary Sue are supporting it by highlighting eight of our favorite literary horror heroines. All of the books we’ve mentioned here—including one by Gaiman himself, which is only fitting—come with the TMS stamp of approval if you want to participate in the AHR tradition of book-gifting.

30 Spooky Story Recommendations for All Hallows Read

Way back in the earlier part of this year Neil Gaiman decided that it was really too bad that we, as a culture, didn’t have a holiday that was just about giving books to people. Thus: All Hallows Read, an exciting new tradition of giving people the gift of a scary book or story on Halloween. We’re no strangers to devouring a book ourselves, so we offer you not just ten, as these things usually go, but a full thirty scary books, stories, and comics for your reading pleasure.

10 Action Librarians

According to Wikipedia, “stereotypes of librarians in popular culture are frequently negative: librarians are portrayed as puritanical, punitive, unattractive, and introverted if female, or timid, unattractive, and effeminate if male.”

But there are plenty of kick ass librarians in fiction! Like all the time… when they are allowed to be main characters… and aren’t one-scene jokes… um.

So, we made a Power Grid. Yes, this is usually how these things go.
