More Star Wars Episode VII Casting and Plot Rumors, Now With 75% More Geek Cred!

As you probably are well aware, rumors about Star Wars Episode VII casting continue to swirl furiously… as they have pretty constantly since work started on the next round of Star Wars movies! The new rumors, however, give not just a peek into the casting process but also a look at some new details regarding the plot of Episode VII.  Since the departure of original screenwriter Michael Arndt, apparently the focus of the next installment has changed, requiring a shift in casting plans as well as in the actual script itself.  Rumors and potential spoilers after the jump, so don’t read on unless you want to know!

Actors who are currently speculated to be up for roles in the newest movie in the Star Wars franchise include Michael Fassbender, Adam Driver, Hugo Weaving, and Jesse Plemons. Fassbender and Weaving, of course, have established roles in other geek franchises as Magneto and Agent Smith/Elrond, respectively, but obviously that’s never stopped a casting before!  Driver has been rumored to be up for the role of Nightwing for the upcoming Superman/Batman film as well.  So that’s quite the geek-cred list there.  The Playlist speculates Plemons might be either a young Luke Skywalker or perhaps Luke’s kid, given his vague resemblance to Mark Hamill. Really, though, all four men are pretty great actors and it would be interesting to see them join the Star Wars universe, but it’s impossible to know what roles, if any, they’d be playing at this stage in the game.  It also seems that the Star Wars team, helmed by J.J. Abrams, is basically talking to everyone in Hollywood.

The two plot-related details to surface through all these rumors are even more interesting than the casting rumors, though.  Apparently Arndt’s departure was because of his script’s focus on the next generation of heroes, while Abrams wanted to focus at least one more time on the main trio of heroes from the original Star Wars movies.  If this is true, it means that Episode VII will be chock full of Luke, Leia, and Han – but is that the best way to launch the next round of movies?

The other interesting rumor is that “Abrams and Lucasfilm are now searching for a 20-something female actress who is either of mixed race or black. The rumor is that Obi-Wan Kenobi had a daughter or granddaughter.” That is definitely an exciting rumor on many levels ranging from wanting to see Obi-Wan’s kid to seeing more diversity in the Star Wars movies.  Here’s hoping for a lack of tokenism and for a galaxy far, far away that’s full of fully-fleshed out characters of all types. You can do it, LucasFilm. You can do it.

I didn’t realize how extensive J.J.’s re-writes were until now. Alarms are going off. Nothing can be as bad as the prequels but my confidence is waning…

One may forgive but I always thought that Yedi were actually living like monks (except of those who rather join “the dark side” ;-) and become Sith)? And now, you are telling me Obi-Wan has a kid?

Okay, I don’t know if I like it but I will forgive them if they cast a really cool actress for the role!

Pent up sexual frustration is what eventually lead to Anakin’s fall and the destruction of the Jedi Order. Clearly, Obi-Wan learned his lesson.

Sometimes he learned it four times in one night.

    Baw chicka wah wah!

I really hope there’s someone writing a book about this production. Could be a fiasco in the vein of Cleopatra, Heaven’s Gate, and Bonfire of the Vanities.

Obi betraying that code seems pretty terrible. Hopefully it’ll just be a secret Sandpeople padawan he trained or something feasible.

  • Ryan Colson

I coulda sworn it was jealousy at imaginary Obi bangings combined with fear his wife would die combined with dead mommy more than sex..

  • SuperFubar

i wish they would just do something original instead of trying to find ways to link it to the other movies.

Depends how you read the Code. Attachment and love are forbidden. Recreational sexy times are not always connected to love and attachment. I’m not making any moral judgements here, but given the Force is at least partly biological, completely outlawing reproduction would not be in the best interests of the Jedi.

Heck, maybe in Galaxy Farfaraway, there’s no stigma attached to being a single parent, and children are nurtured and valued as the gift they are. But really, that is going from the realms of science fiction to pure fantasy.

  • Vian Lawson

Those two things are not mutually exclusive; surely the challenge is to make something that feels like Star Wars (so, has enough links and references to … whatever the Canon ends up being … to make it part of the universe), but is also original?

For some reason I really want Ksenia Solo to play Jaina Solo.

I think it’s important to cast obscure or unknown actors. Not the likes of Hugo Weaving or anyone else who already appears in another sci-fi/fantasy gig. I feel stink for whoever is writing ep 7, the pressure must be intense. Still, things can’t get much worse than the prequels so there’s not much to lose.

I hope the mixed-race/black actress is Obi-Wan’s and Mace Windu’s love child. Or genetic experiment. Or just cybernetic-armed-Mace-Windu’s daughter he was training to get revenge on the Emperor.

I like the connection, but I see her as a better Tahiri

  • Ben English

Actually I believe Lucas said that the Jedi are allowed to have sex, just not form deeper emotional attachments.

Attachment is forbidden. Jedi boinking is pretty much mandated if you want more Jedi.

In the Original Trilogy nobody seemed to find it strange that Anakin had kids, they didn’t about it like it was part of his downfall.

“I think it’s important to cast obscure or unknown actors.”

For the main roles, I agree. Hey, it worked pretty well for the original movies. :) I can see, though, casting someone like Hugo Weaving and/or Michael Fassbinder in supporting roles, much as they did with Sir Alec Guiness and Peter Cushing in the first movies (or Samuel L. Jackson in the second set, for that matter).

  • Lisa Liscoumb

“Jedi boinking” – hehe. I think that’s my new favourite phrase. Having said that, there’s nothing that says there has to be boinking to produce children in the SW universe – they could do in vitro fertilization, test tube babies or even grow them in vats for that matter. And, if they don’t want “attachment” that would almost make more sense.

Because I DESPISE the Jedi of the late Republican era, I imagine they had unprotected sex with strangers, and if they got pregnant, they then sent the Jedi to “test” the children and then take them away.

But again, I despise the Jedi of that era, arrogant shortsighted assholes, the lot of ‘em.

if it doesn’t have grand admiral Thrawn as the main antagonist, then I’m not interested.
