Star Trek 3 Writer Simon Pegg Comments on Those Idris Elba Klingon Rumors

They've actually cast an unknown actor named "John Harrison."

Has he dashed our great hopes or given us something epic to hold onto?

Your mileage may vary of course, but I was not a fan of Star Trek Into Darkness. I wasn’t totally on board with JJ. Abrams’ first Trek film either, but I knew where they were coming from. Stark Trek is a huge franchise, creating new characters and having them take off is difficult, so why not utilize the originals? Ok great. Cool. Then the creative team specifically gave them an alternate-history get out of jail free card, leaving them the ability to boldly go where no one has gone before…

…and then they decided to reuse the most famous Trek storyline of all time for Star Trek Into Darkness. And they did so poorly.

So you can understand why, when we heard Idris Elba might join the cast of Star Trek 3 last week, my mind jumped to the possibility of him playing a Klingon. Because if they’re just going to keep going down this road, the third outing will have them going up against the Klingons in a big way just like in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

During an interview with Absolute Radio, Simon Pegg was asked directly:

Reporter: What about the rumors that Idris Elba’s gonna be a Klingon?

Pegg: That’s not true.

Reporter: Not at all?

Pegg: No, no, no.

Reporter: In it at all.. is he in the film?

Pegg: Idris… I heard there’s a rumor he’s been spoken to about stuff, so he may be in the film but he won’t be a Klingon. [Laughs.] Or maybe he will! [shrugs comedically]

We know everyone has to keep a tight lid on things at this junction, but Pegg seemed genuine when he denied the Klingon part. So at least there’s that. Pegg also recently discussed the direction they’re headed saying they want to go in the spirit of the television show, “a story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun.”

Are you hopeful?
