Add 1984’s Splash to the List of Upcoming Remakes

Producer Brian Grazer recently revealed in an interview with CNBC that he’s working on a remake of the 1984 romantic comedy Splash, only with a twist. Grazer hinted that “there’s a movie star that’s going to be involved,” it’ll be from the point-of-view of the mermaid and will be closer to an earlier draft of Splash.

While there’s a lot to love about the original and a remake might be charming, I’m a lot more interested in the untitled upcoming project from Guillermo del Toro that’s been described as “Wall-E meets Splash.” The film will inevitably be compared to Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid starring ChloĂ« Grace Moretz. Are mermaids making a comeback? Get me a remake of the Disney Channel Original Movie The Thirteenth Year while you’re at it! Or a faithful adaptation of Alice Hoffman’s Aquamarine!

If you’re hungry for a Splash remake though, there’s also a Hong Kong film from 1994 called Mermaid Got Married based on the 1984 film that I remember liking (I was like 14 when I watched it though, so, y’know, nostalgic memory goggles). It features a young Takeshi Kaneshiro and I think I’ll give it a rewatch soon!

Are you eager for a Splash remake? Who would you like to see cast in the main roles?
