Sony Says It’ll Release The Interview, Possibly On Crackle

And for free.

After President Obama publicly declared Sony’s decision to pull The Interview “a mistake,” Sony lawyer David Boies clarified on Meet the Press this weekend that Sony is indeed planning to move forward with releasing the movie to the public. This is tricky, scary business, of course, and in many ways uncharted territory, but Sony has declared its commitment to getting The Interview out there to the public.

As Boies said:

Sony only delayed this. Sony has been fighting to get this picture distributed. It will be distributed. How it’s going to be distributed, I don’t think anybody knows quite yet, but it’s going to be distributed.

That a Seth Rogen/James Franco buddy comedy has gained such importance over the past few weeks is one of the more surprising developments of the end of 2014, but here we continue to be.

The New York Post is reporting that the distribution of the movie will take place through Crackle, Sony’s own VOD service, for free. That could be a way to side-step whether the major theater chains would re-open the possibility of showing The Interview, as well as any fear other outside VOD services might have had of being hacked in retaliation.

What are your guys’ thoughts on how Sony et all should be handling all this?
