Psychology of Cosplay [VIDEO]

When I found out I was on a panel set for 9 p.m. Friday night of New York Comic Con I figured it would be the panelists and ten of our friends. Much to my surprise, it was standing room only to hear psychologists Robin Rosenberg and Andrea Letamendi and cosplayers Holly Conrad, Bill Doran, and yours truly talk about the psychology behind cosplay and cosplayers. Moderator Jenna Busch helped lead us through some interesting statistics on the people who do it, how much time and money they spend on their costumes, and the reactions of those outside the geek community. Thanks to Lawrence Brenner for videotaping the hour-long panel!

Cool! Looks like a Dharma Initiative video from the 80s.

Okay,I watched it all. Whew. Well, there’s an hour I’ll never get back. LOL (I’m kidding.) It was very interesting. Kudos to that gentleman for quitting his job and living a dream. That takes a lot of courage. The most I’ve dressed up is probably wearing a comic book related t-shirt in public. And I was self conscious about that. I definitely would not wear something such as that armor for 12 hours unless they paid me. A lot. The best costume for me would be something like Tom Baker’s Dr. Who outift. The hat to hide my bald spot and the scarf and coat to hide the fat. lol (been working on the latter to some success.)

What saddens me is when the creators of these characters we play vocalize how much they hate cosplay. I’ve seen the tweets and I’ve overheard them (usually when I’m in street clothes near them). It’s perfectly okay for them to write a death-defying character, psychopath, or whatever but not okay for someone to dress like it.

I love the genderbending cosplay trend. I need more of that. And maybe it’s different in the comics and game convention community, but cosplay has changed dramatically in the anime convention community since I went to my first con in 2000.
