Stop What You’re Doing and Play This In-Browser Mario 64 HD Remake
Even if you're at work. (Especially if you're at work.)
To demonstrate the functionality of his Super Character Controller in the Unity game engine, developer Roystan Ross put together this HD remake of the first level of the game that defined 3D character control in the first place: Super Mario 64. You can take it for a spin right in your browser!
Sadly, you won’t be able to get past the first level, because it’s just a tech demo/Ross probably doesn’t want to get sued into oblivion by Nintendo, but it’s a perfect nostalgia trip and time waster combo. You’ll also need to install the Unity web player to run the game, so you might be out of luck if you’re on a password-protected work computer. (Although it’s entirely possible your local IT geek will understand your desire in this instance and help you out.)
If you suffer from those unfortunate circumstances, you can at least live vicariously through this demo video and enjoy just how glorious the game looks with updated graphics:
I can happily report to Mr. Ross that the his character controller and the remake works wonderfully after my own extensive testing—for important journalism reasons, of course.
